GRE Analytical Writing

GRE Analytical Writing is one of the sections in the GRE General Test conducted by the Educational Testing Service (ETS). The Analytical Writing Assessment (awa) section is included in the GRE test to measure test taker’s critical thinking and analytical writing skills. This section uses two types of essays: 

  1. Issue Essays and 
  2. Argument Essays

These tasks will examine a test taker’s ability to understand complex ideas and articulate with relevant examples.

GRE Analytical Writing Syllabus

The GRE Analytical Writing syllabus involves two question types: ‘Analyse an issue’ and ‘Analyse an argument’, and followed by certain topics. Let’s look at the types of questions first.script
 

  • Analyze an Issue: Here, the student must note the issue given, and explain why they’ve taken that stand of point. This tests the student’s critical thinking ability.

Topic 17:
Humans arrived in the Kaliko Islands about 7,000 years ago, and within 3,000 years most of the large mammal species that had lived in the forests of the Kaliko Islands were extinct. Previous archaeological findings have suggested that early humans generally relied on both fishing and hunting for food; since archaeologists have discovered numerous sites in the Kaliko Islands where the bones of fish were discarded, it is likely that the humans also hunted the mammals. Furthermore, researchers have uncovered simple tools, such as stone knives, that could be used for hunting. The only clear explanation is that humans caused the extinction of the various mammal species through excessive hunting.
