Since IELTS has certain assessment criteria for listening, reading, writing, and speaking, evaluators use those criteria to assess a candidate’s English proficiency. How is the IELTS academic reading band score calculated?
The IELTS Academic Reading band score is calculated by the number of correct answers out of 40 questions. The IELTS Reading test contains 40 questions each. For each correct answer, one mark is given. Based on the number of correct answers, the IELTS Academic Reading score comes anywhere from 0 to 9. For example, 35 correct answers - a band score of 8.0. To get a band score of 9.0, you must master all the IELTS Academic Reading question types available.
The IELTS Academic band score is calculated based on certain criteria. Once each component score is given, the average of the four component scores will be rounded to the closest whole number or half band. For example, if the average band score comes as .25, it will be rounded up to the next half band.

IELTS Academic reading score calculator
Test takers can calculate the specific IELTS Academic reading score or the overall band score using an IELTS score calculator. Raw scores obtained from 40 questions are converted to the IELTS nine-band scale. For example: if a candidate obtains 23 out of 40 questions, they will get a band score of 6.

What if I’m not satisfied with my IELTS Academic reading score?
If you’re not happy or satisfied with your IELTS score, you can apply for an ‘Enquiry on Results’ (EOR) by visiting the test centre where you took your test. You must apply for it within six weeks of the test date and pay an enquiry fee. If the band score changes, your enquiry fee will be fully refunded. The procedure for payment is through bank transfer.
