16 Tips for scoring high in IELTS Academic Reading

Our internal survey reveals that 81% of students achieved an 8.0 band score in IELTS Academic Reading; likewise, 93% of students improved their score by 2 bands (from the previous band score) after following these 16 tips. Without further adieu, let’s look at each of them that guarantees a high score on the IELTS academic reading test.

  1. Read a variety of sources (Newspapers, Magazines, Journals) - Test takers must do a lot of reading exercises with newspapers, magazines, journals, etc., as it helps them understand different topics, writer’s opinion, vocabulary, and so on.
  2. Enhance your vocabulary - Vocabulary helps you score more not only in Reading tests but also in other tests. To enhance vocabulary, take new words from various English reading materials, check their meaning, and revise them daily.
  3. Practice time management - If you practise time management now, you will become confident later. Before appearing for the exam, take a mock test with a given duration as it keeps you calm and prevents panic during the exam.
  4. Read, Practise, Repeat - Once you’re familiar with the question types, read, practise, and repeat till you achieve mastery in reading format. By doing so, you can literally make a difference in your performance.
  5. Read instructions first - First, read the instructions carefully before answering each question, because some have instructions like ‘NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS’ or ‘ONLY ONE WORD’ etc.
  6. Skimming - While practising reading tests, start by skimming a passage. Skimming is done to locate the main idea or theme of the passage. It helps to do selective reading and focuses only on key ideas or text. Ultimately, it saves ample time for you.
  7. Scanning - Scanning is a form of reading paragraphs faster. It is to identify specific factual information. Since many questions require attention to keywords, scanning is the easiest way to do it. Once you have the questions, just crawl your eyes over them to locate the main words. Some students scan the passage by reading the first two and the last two sentences.
  8. Read all questions before answering - Students normally answer known questions first and then the unknown. But it’s not advisable for IELTS. Since some questions may look similar, test-takers get confused and tend to answer them wrongly. So read all the questions first.
  9. Pay attention to details - While reading a passage, always look for dates, places, names, capital letters, underlining, bold & italics, figures, graphs and tables to understand the main idea/theme of the passage.
  10. Underline keywords - Underline words that add value to the passage or sometimes that helps you identify the essence of the paragraph.
  11. Grammar check - After answering the question, read the full sentence once again to ensure it is grammatically correct. Some think that IELTS don’t look for grammar in reading tests, but they do.
  12. Time check - Answering 40 questions in one hour is easy if you keep a time check. Don’t spend the same time on all questions. Give extra time for question types that consumes more reading and analysing, whereas less time for the easy ones.
  13. Keep the order - Remember that the questions and answers follow the same order in the text. So the answer to question 2 will come next to the answer to question 1 and so on.
  14. No boxes left unanswered - If you don’t know any answer, it’s okay! Since there’s no negative mark system, you can write something on the answer sheet rather than be left blank.
  15. Carefully transfer your answers on the answer sheet - Since no extra time is given to transfer answers, students do it in a hurry and commit silly errors like writing wrong keywords or marking incorrect options. So take enough time to transfer your answers carefully.
  16. Recheck your answers - In one hour's time duration, allocate a minimum of 15 - 20 minutes to recheck your answers. While rechecking, you can find that one error left unnoticed and rectify them immediately.

Conclusion

The IELTS Academic test makes even an expert commit mistakes in reading. In order to be better prepared for IELTS Academic Reading, start practising those tips and advice from now on. It will keep you performing well to achieve the expected band score of 9.0. Make sure you practice regularly and well committed. All the best!
