READING PASSAGE 3

You should spend about 20 minutes on questions 27-40, which are based on Reading Passage 3 below.

GLOBAL MARKETING TRENDS

Global marketing has seen marketing trends change at an astronomical pace, thanks to new and innovative avenues for advertising. Applications such as messaging apps, videos, chatbots, which have succeeded in reaching out to people all over the world are just some of the ongoing trends that have been seen in 2017.
Influencer marketing as a tool is gaining popularity because it is easy for people to trust recommendations by favourite personalities. Though it was always popular, recent times have seen this trend vaulting to the top five positions. With the right influencers, it is an easy matter to create credibility by way of advertisements or social media posts. It is assumed that as they are endorsing the brands, they have faith in the product, and that trust affects the thinking of the consumer. Though every venture has a policy regarding influencer strategy, executing a valid strategy that is sensible is something few organizations have been able to do. Says Bryan Kramer, American businessman and co-founder and CEO of PureMatter, a social media agency, “Building an army of influencers can help companies of all sizes harness the immense power of word-of-mouth marketing and make it work for you. But not all influencers are created equal, and the trick is finding the right influencer for your product.”

Bob Kersten, executive director of client services at Landor, feels that the marketing potential in audio is vast, but it’s an area of advertising that is currently unnoticed by marketers. Consumers, however, are becoming aware of 3D audio, which gives more depth to sound, whether it is in their headphones or their homes. A senior strategist at Landor, Thomas Sauvage adds that another way by which marketing may be able to utilise the aspect of voice and sound is by taking advantage of speech. Gaining popularity are platforms like Alexa, and they will, in all likelihood, alter the way brands conduct business with customers. “We’re just at the beginning of this,” says Sauvage. “This could be a completely new avenue for brands that push them to think seriously about the services they’re providing to customers.”
What stands out according to Kersten is the technology of virtual reality and augmented reality, as it has the unbelievable potential for storytelling and entertainment. While virtual reality finds use in education, travel and social issues amongst others, the Wall Street Journal’s move to dedicate a whole team to virtual reality is an example of its limitless potential. “I walked away saying that brands are really going to need to figure out what the role of VR is and how they’re going to represent themselves in it,” says Kersten, “Everywhere you turn there’s a genuine, tangible demonstration of how this can be delivered to consumers. It’s here, and it’s not a novelty.”

A prospective powerhouse for the promotion of content is Facebook. Also appealing is Snapchat. It can do more for social media with its meteoric rise in popularity. Snapchat showcases the advantage of short-lived material and shows the importance of ‘disappearing.’ For Generation Z well-known for its short attention span, this is the key fascination and makes a strong argument for content strategizing.
Computer programs called Chatbots make use of artificial intelligence to mimic conversation. Whether it is self-initiated tasks or quasi-conversation, they can change the way a person interacts with the internet. “When you think of chatbots, you probably think of an annoying popup on a website that looks like it was built in the mid-90s,” says Adam Toren, founder of Young Entrepreneur and Biz Warriors, a forum for entrepreneurs. According to Adam, chatbot technology has become a lot more complex. Facebook, which invests a considerable amount of capital into the chatbot program that offers users with facilities such as personalised responses, updates and more, is an example.

With ever-increasing internet traffic coming from mobile devices, there is little doubt that the future is mobile. It is a massive opportunity to use the mobile to deliver your content and ads. With a generation that is always on the move, you have to make sure your content gets integrated into the user’s lifestyle.
The future will see numerous channels and tools available with which to reach out to the consumer. This implies that regarding managing and marketing your brand, things are going to get more versatile and of increasing complexity.
