IELTS General Reading Table Completion Exercise 1

Answer questions 1-5 which are based on the reading passage below.

Otters

Otters have long, thin bodies with short legs, which make them perfect for pushing and searching through tunnels. Adult male otters can grow to be up to 4 ft tall and 30 pounds in weight. Females have a lesser stature than males. The nose of the Eurasian otter is the smallest compared to other species, with a 'W' shape. The tail (or rudder, or stern) of an otter is thick at the base and taper to a flattened tip. This is part of the propulsion unit for swimming quickly under the water. Otter fur is made up of 2 types of hair: sturdy guard hairs that form a waterproof outer layer, and thick and fine under-fur that serves as the otter's thermal underwear. The fur should be kept in good condition by grooming. Seawater decreases the waterproofing and insulating qualities of otter fur when saltwater in the fur. This is the reason why freshwater pools are important to otters living on the coast. After swimming, they wash the salts off in pools and wiggle on the ground to make themselves dry.

The smell is used for hunting, communicating and detecting danger. The sensitivity of an otter's sense of smell is possibly comparable to that of a dog. On land, otter eyes are small and they are likely short-sighted. They have the power to change the shape of the lens of the eye, making it more spherical, and therefore overcoming water refraction. Otters may hunt fish by sight in clean water and favourable light. Because the otter's eyes and nose are high on its head, it can see and breathe even while the rest of its body is submerged. Except for steering, the cotter flexes its back end in a sequence of vertical movements while underwater. Giant otters and sea otters have even more important webs, while the Asian short-clawed otter has no webbing – they hunt for shrimps in holes and paddy fields so they don’t need to swim fast. Otter’s ears are very small for streamlining, but have a very powerful hearing sense and are protected by valves which close against water pressure.

    The History of Early Cinema

In its first thirty years, the growth and development of the history of cinema is enormous. It began in a few of the big cities such as New York, London, Paris and Berlin, but soon it attracted larger audiences across the world, which replaced the different forms of entertainment. Audiences grew the same as the places to show films are also growing, and finishing up with the ‘great picture places’ of the 1920s. At the same time, films also developed from short films to the feature films which has dominated the world’s cine screens up to day.

Majorly, the French and Americans were the most passionate exporters of the new invention, helping to initiate the cinema in China, Japan, Latin America and Russia. The French and the Americans played a major role in the artistic development. Before the First World War, Denmark, Russia and Italy also played some role.
At the end of the day, the United States becomes and remains the position of largest single market for films in the world. Westwards attained the centre of filmmaking which referred to Hollywood and the films from Hollywood actually got into the world markets after the First World War and have done so ever since.
