Types of Job Interviews

Facing a job interview requires much more than technical skill and know-how. Traditional interview techniques have been replaced by more dynamic methods. Job seekers must be well informed of the different types of interviews they may be expected to clear.
A The good-old face-to-face: Also called as the in-person interview, this is the usual type wherein the interviewer directly communicates with the respondent following a standardised or semi-standardised procedure. The interviewer may be one individual or a panel. To identify the interviewee’s strengths or competency, in a few cases, the interview may be taken alongside other candidates too. The Personal interviews last between one to two hours.
B Assessment centres: Here, the candidate is assigned wide-ranging tasks that test suitability for the job. It involves a comparative assessment of performance in a range of situations through group assignments, discussions, in-tray exercises, written tests and presentations. Interviews at assessment centres usually last for a full working day.
C Telephonic: This is a tool for the recruiter that will aid in the initial assessment of the candidate as someone who is seriously interested in the offer. It also helps the interviewer to know whether to take you further through the application process. Interviewers usually test your general competencies and skills by focusing on your experience, qualifications and salary expectations. Telephonic interviews commonly last for around 30 minutes. Candidates are then invited for a face-to-face interview or to an assessment centre.
D Video interviews: This interview is an alternative to the traditional telephone interview, using media such as Skype, FaceTime or Youtube. Many organisations, especially those seeking to recruit in the fields of sales, media and marketing, sometimes screen candidates through video interviews. Like telephone interviews, remote video sessions take around half an hour.
Candidates tend to confuse video interviews with video chats, but there are significant differences and need preparation accordingly. Video interviews may be one way, where the interviewer sends text-based questions. The candidate records his/her response, and the interviewer can check it later.
Two way live interviews use platforms such as Skype, FaceTime or YouTube, making the experience similar to a face to face interview. Live video interviews could occur on cloud, which means the interview takes place in your browser. Live interviews also offer some facilities such as branding and recording.
Candidates need to prepare for the type of interview. Personal and video interviews would require you to be well dressed and presentable in appearance and manner. One way interviews give you the convenience to answer at your time but remember, telephone or one way video interviews are usually the first step in the selection procedure, after which your candidature is considered or disapproved for further process.
Interviewers also need to prepare and define criteria considering pros and cons of the different interview techniques.
Technology has proved to be a time and cost-effective tool in the job world, however, face to face interviews have not lost popularity and continue to remain the most preferred type.
