HOW TO OPTIMIZE YOUR WORK-DESK
We spend a good 8-10 hours a day at our workplace, and most of this is behind the desk. Tools that make work easy are potentially damaging to our physical health, and consequently our productivity when it can be avoided with simple DOs and DON’Ts.
Here are a few tips to increase your work efficiency and save your health too:
A Did you know that sitting or standing can also cause injuries? Sounds weird, but it’s true. Your chair can do that. Choose adjustable chairs with armrests, backrest and leg rest. Hard chairs are most unfriendly, leading to stiffness in the neck, back or waist. Chairs that adjust to body height and table space allow swift movements as you sit or stand up. You don’t want to be clumsy at work with body ache. Some furniture brands have captured the market with ergonomics gaining popularity. Though they cost a fortune, you can always choose from the affordable range.
B Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) can convert into a permanent health issue. Invest in user-friendly and scientifically designed office furniture. Chairs with the above-mentioned features are useful. Chairs with wheels and that can swivel are most friendly. You can easily reach out for things you need without straining your body. Now you know how sitting can cause an injury.
C Use computer screens and light settings appropriately to prevent strain to your eyes. Follow the recommended distance and angle between your eyes and the computer screen. Standing desks are also an option. In a standing position, you can maintain better eye level with the screen. Choose between the sitting desk and standing desk setting depending on your work.
D Hygiene is a factor. The keyboard and mouse, computer screen, table top, racks, stationary, all the things that we touch frequently must be cleaned regularly. Our fingertips are potential areas for harmful germs and bacteria. Air-conditioned offices need to be cleaned thoroughly as these are devoid of natural sunlight or ventilation that eliminates microbes.
E Dust settling on papers, files, paper racks, and other such objects causes respiratory ailments and skin infections. Clean your workstation daily. Keep dusters handy and keep those clean too.
F Use room fresheners and insect repellants for a germ-free environment. Foul smell and buzzing insects are the last things you want to encounter at your workplace. A pleasant ambience includes everything that affects our senses.
G Avoid clutter. Arrange your desk with stationery kits, paper-weights, file racks or other items as required, on the desk or shelves or in the drawer. Your counter will look nice and clean- organisation at a glance. Also, it will save you the discomfort of fumbling for small things such as a pencil, or important things such as your pen drive. Use drawers. Place things in order of requirement so that they are handy. Important papers or tools can be labelled and set aside so that you don’t waste time searching when you need them. As it’s rightly said, ‘A place for everything and everything in its place.’ Organisation of your work and your workplace are equally important in creating a good impression.
The physical environment affects productivity at work, though we seldom give it a thought. Small but essential changes can make a huge difference in your professional life and must be incorporated for your benefit.
