dMAT Exemption for Germany

The Digital Master Test (dMAT) is a standardized academic aptitude test for Master’s applicants in India. It is administered by g.a.s.t. as part of the APS verification process. Indian students applying for a Master’s degree in Germany for the Summer Semester 2027 intake or later need to take the dMAT. This applies to students whose degree falls under fields such as Engineering, Commerce, Accounting, Finance, Economics, or Business/Management.

However, not all students need to take the dMAT. Applicants who completed their APS online registration or shipped their APS application documents before 29 June 2026 are exempt from the new dMAT requirement. Who should take the dMAT test?

Who is Exempt from the dMAT exam?

You are exempt from the dMAT if you are applying for Bachelor's or PhD programs, the Fall/Winter 2026 intake, or have completed your APS registration or submitted your APS application documents before 29 June 2026. Applicants with Bachelor's degrees other than Engineering, Commerce, Accounting, Finance, Economics, Business, and Management are also exempt. 

Degree and Program Exemptions

• Bachelor's applicants: Students applying for Bachelor's programs are exempt from the dMAT exam.
• Current Bachelor's students: Bachelor's students who have not yet completed at least 5 semesters in a 3-year program or at least 7 semesters in a 4-year program are exempt from the dMAT requirement.
• PhD applicants: Students applying for PhD programs are not required to take the dMAT.
• Exchange and partnership programs: Students applying through official exchange, double-degree, or university partnership programs do not need to take the dMAT if they provide the required documents.

Field of Study Exemptions

• Non-affected disciplines: Applicants whose Bachelor's degree is not in Engineering, Commerce, Accounting, Finance, Economics, Business, or Management do not need to take the dMAT.

Application Timeline Exemptions

• APS Registration: Applicants who completed their APS online registration before 29 June 2026 or shipped their complete APS application documents before 29 June 2026 do not need to take the dMAT.
• APS Certificate Holders: Applicants who have already completed the APS process and received their APS certificate are not required to take the dMAT.
• Earlier Intakes: Students applying for Fall/Winter 2026 intake cycles are exempt from the dMAT requirement. The dMAT applies to Summer 2027 and later intakes.

Which Degree Fields Are Affected and Not?

Degrees in Engineering, Commerce, Finance, Economics, Business, and Management are affected. However, some degree fields may require special evaluation to determine whether the dMAT requirement applies, based on the official degree title, branch, major, or specialisation. Biotechnology	Biotechnology Engineering, Biochemical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, and Bioengineering are covered. B.Sc. Biotechnology, Microbiology, and Life Sciences are not covered.
Food & Textile	Food Engineering, Food Engineering & Technology, and Textile Engineering are covered. Food Technology, Food Processing, and Textile Technology are not automatically covered unless classified as Engineering.
Economics	Economics degrees such as B.A./B.Sc. Economics, Economics Honours, Applied Economics, Business Economics, and Financial Economics are covered.
B.Com/BBA Specialisations	May be covered when the official degree is classified as Commerce, Business, Finance, Economics, or Management.
Management	Hotel, Hospitality, Tourism, Aviation, Healthcare, Hospital Administration, Construction, and Infrastructure Management are not covered based on Management alone.

Fields Requiring Separate Assessment

Degrees such as Hotel & Hospitality Management, Tourism & Travel Management, Aviation & Airport Management, Hospital Administration & Healthcare Management, Construction & Infrastructure Management, Sports Management, Hotel Management & Catering Technology, Hospitality & Hotel Administration, and related BBA specialisations require special assessment.

Fields Not Included

Fields such as computer science, IT, data science, biotechnology, life science, architecture, pharmacy, law, etc are not automatically included under dMAT. Refer to the official dMAT affected-field lists issued by APS India.

Things to know before applying for dMAT & APS

1. Students applying on or after 29 June 2026, APS India can issue the APS certificate only after the required dMAT certificate has been submitted, and its result has been verified against the information provided by g.a.s.t.
2. The dMAT certificate becomes part of the applicant’s APS documentation, and the dMAT result will be reflected on the APS certificate.
3. A low dMAT score does not automatically result in rejection of the APS certificate.
4. The dMAT exam does not replace formal recognition of a university degree or the assessment of higher-education entrance requirements.
5. The dMAT certificate is considered along with other academic documents, depending on the university and degree program. German universities independently decide how to assess applications.
6. APS India strongly recommends checking the anabin status of your previous higher education institution and degree before registering for the dMAT.
