VIT CGPA Calculator

Select Semesters

A VIT CGPA Calculator is a helpful online tool made for students at Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT). It lets you figure out your overall academic performance across all the semesters. To calculate your CGPA, you need your GPA score which is analyzed from subject grade and credit points. You just enter your individual grades and the credit hours for each course, and it calculates your Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA). Use our VIT GPA CGPA calculators given above to find out your GPA & CGPA scores easily. Also, Read this article to learn how to calculate your CGPA and the formula behind it.

This article includes:

VIT Grade Scale

Below is the grade scale used at VIT, displaying the corresponding values assigned to each grade in academic evaluation.

Formula used to Calculate VIT CGPA

Calculate your VIT CGPA with this direct formula based on the grade points and credit hours obtained in each subject.

Formula:

VIT CGPA = (Total Grade Points Obtained) / (Total Credits)

Whereas,

  • CGPA represents Cumulative Grade Point Average.
  • Total Grade Points Obtained refers to the sum of individual subject’s Grade Points multiplied by the corresponding Credits for all subjects.
  • Total Credits refers to the sum of Credits for all subjects.

Alternate Representation:

In other terms, the formula can also be expressed as:

CGPA= ∑(GradePoints×CreditHours) / ∑CreditHours

In this alternate formula:

  • CGPA represents Cumulative Grade Point Average.
  • GradePoints refer to the points corresponding to the grade obtained in each course.
  • CreditHours are the hours assigned to each course.

How to Calculate VIT CGPA?

Here is the easy way to calculate your VIT CGPA by following this step-by-step guide.

Collect the Information:

  1. Grades: Gather your letter grades for all the courses you have completed during your program, including each semester.
  2. Credit Hours: Identify the credit hours assigned to each course, which can be found in your syllabus or program handbook.
  3. Grading Scale: Confirm the grading scale used at VIT for your program, usually ranging from S (10) to F (0.0).

Step 1: Calculate the Course GPA

  • You can calculate your course GPA by multiplying the grade point, as per the VIT grading scale, by the credit hours for each course.
  • For example, if you get an A (9) in a 3-credit hour course, your course GPA would be 9 * 3 = 27.

Step 2: Calculate Semester GPA for each semester (SGPA)

  • Sum up the individual course GPAs computed for all courses within a particular semester.
  • Divide the accumulated total by the sum of credit hours for all courses in that semester.
  • The resulting value represents your SGPA for that specific semester.

Step 3: Calculate Cumulative GPA (CGPA)

After obtaining SGPA for each semester, proceed with the following steps:

  • Multiply the SGPA of each semester by the total credit hours undertaken in that specific semester.
  • Sum up these products for all completed semesters in your program.
  • Divide the obtained sum by the total credit hours across all semesters i.e. the sum of individual semester credit hours.

This final outcome represents your Cumulative GPA (CGPA).

Cumulative GPA Calculation Example

Suppose a student took three courses in a semester with the following grades and credit hours:

  • Course 1: A (9) with 3 credit hours
  • Course 2: B (8) with 4 credit hours
  • Course 3: A- (8.5) with 2 credit hours

The Course GPA for each course is calculated by multiplying the grade point by the credit hours:

  • Course 1 GPA = 9 * 3 = 27
  • Course 2 GPA = 8 * 4 = 32
  • Course 3 GPA = 8.5 * 2 = 17

Now, let's calculate the Semester GPA (SGPA). Sum up the individual course GPAs and divide by the sum of credit hours for all courses:

SGPA = (27+32+17) / (3+4+2) = 76/9 ≈ 8.44

So, the Semester GPA for this semester is approximately 8.44.

Assuming this is the second semester and the student's first-semester SGPA was 8.2, let's calculate the CGPA.

  • First Semester SGPA = 8.2 (Assumed)
  • Second Semester SGPA = 8.44

Now, calculate the CGPA assuming Total Credit Hours for both the Semesters as 9.

CGPA = (8.2×9)+(8.44×9) / (9+9)

CGPA = (73.8+75.96)/18 ≈ 149.76 / 18 ≈ 8.32

So, the Cumulative GPA after two semesters is approximately 8.32.

VIT CGPA to Percentage Conversion Table

As per VIT University norms, the conversion formula for Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) to percentage is as follows:

Percentage equivalent of CGPA = CGPA * 10

For example, CGPA 9.23 is considered equivalent to 92.30%.
