Formula for Calculating SRM University CGPA
The CGPA at SRM University is determined by dividing the total grade points multiplied by the respective credits for all courses by the sum of total credits.
Formula:
CGPA = Total Credit Points / Total Credits
Whereas:
- Total Credit Points represents sum of (Grade Points * Credits) for all courses
- Total Credits represents sum of credits for all courses
Alternate Representation:
In other terms, the formula can also be expressed as:
CGPA = ∑(GradePoints×Credits) / ∑Credits
In this alternate formula:
- CGPA represents Cumulative Grade Point Average.
- Credits represent the credit hours of the course.
- GradePoints refer to the points corresponding to the grade obtained in each course.
In the formula, you sum up the product of each course's credit hours and corresponding grade points, and then divide that by the total sum of credit hours across all courses. This gives you the overall CGPA.
SRM Cumulative GPA Calculation Example
Suppose a student took three courses in a semester with the following grades and credit hours:
- Course 1: A (9) with 4 credit hours
- Course 2: B (8) with 3 credit hours
- Course 3: A- (8.5) with 2 credit hours
The Course GPA for each course is calculated by multiplying the grade point by the credit hours:
- Course 1 GPA = 9 * 4 = 36
- Course 2 GPA = 8 * 3 = 24
- Course 3 GPA = 8.5 * 2 = 17
Now, let's calculate the Semester GPA (SGPA). Sum up the individual course GPAs and divide by the sum of credit hours for all courses:
SGPA = (36+24+17) / (4+3+2) = 76/9 ≈ 8.56
So, the Semester GPA for this semester is approximately 8.56.
Assuming this is the second semester and the student's first-semester SGPA was 8.3, let's calculate the CGPA.
- First Semester SGPA = 8.3 (Assumed)
- Second Semester SGPA = 8.56
Now, calculate the CGPA assuming Total Credit Hours for both the Semesters as 9.
CGPA = (8.3×9)+(8.56×9) / (9+9)
CGPA = (74.7+77.04)/18 ≈ 151.74 / 18 ≈ 8.43
So, the Cumulative GPA after two semesters is approximately 8.43.
SRM CGPA to Percentage Conversion Table with Formula
As per SRM University norms, the conversion formula for Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) to percentage is as follows:
Percentage of marks = CGPA * 10
Which means, you need to multiply your CGPA by 10 to get the required percentage.
For example, if your CGPA is 9.53, your percentage is considered equivalent to 95.30% (9.53 x 10).
Check the percentage ranges for SRM University CGPA values in the table below.
