Pearson Language Test (PTE) is a test written by non-native English speakers who want to study, work or immigrate abroad. Since TOEFL, and IELTS are presently not acceptable by the Home Affairs of Australia, the PTE Score of Australia is essential for permanent residency (PR).

The PTE is a computerized exam and can be written from home. The exam pattern consists of four modules- PTE reading, writing, listening, and speaking. The result of the exam will be declared within 5-7 days.

The PTE test score is accepted by the Australian Department of Home Affairs and they categorized English proficiency into five levels.

  • Functional English – Applicants falling in this category should have taken the PTE test in the last 12 months of applying for a visa.
  • Vocational English – Applicants falling in this category should have taken the PTE test in the last 3 years of applying for a visa.
  • Competent English
  • Proficient English – Applicants should have taken the PTE test in the last 3 years before applying for a visa.
  • Superior English – It is similar to Proficient English

PTE score for Australian Student Visa

‘To get an Australian student visa, a minimum PTE score of 42 is required. A minimum score of 36 is also accepted if the candidate attends at least 10 weeks of English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students (ELICOS) and a minimum score of 30 is accepted if a student attends 20 weeks of (ELICOS)’.

PTE score for Australian Work Visa

People who apply for an Australian work visa are mostly from non-English-speaking countries. So it is mandatory for applicants to submit evidence that they are proficient in English. Based on the proficiency levels, the following scores need to be obtained to get qualified for an Australian work Visa.

PTE score for Australia PR

Applicants who want to be permanent residents in Australia should prove their English-speaking ability. Proof of a competent English level is required for primary applicants, while evidence of a functional English level is required for secondary applicants.

Exemptions from PTE score for Australia PR

Candidates falling under the below category need not submit the PTE score if they provide proof to the Department of Home Affairs of Australia (DHA) that they are proficient in English by submitting the following documents.

  • General Skilled Migration Visa Holders: Should be a citizen and have valid passports from Canada, New Zealand, the UK, Ireland, USA.
  • Permanent Employer Sponsor under Temporary Residence Transition Stream Visa Holders: Should complete 5 years of full-time study in English.

Australian universities require international students to get a decent score of 65-70 on the PTE exam if they are willing to study in Australia. But few Universities accept students with a PTE score of 50 and above. To list a few,

PTE Score Validity

Applicants must be conscious that PTE test results are valid only for 2 years following the test date. Once the 2 years have lapsed, the test results will automatically be deleted from the test taker’s account. Thus, applicants must attempt the test again if it is necessary to prove their English proficiency after 2 years.
