Write from Dictation: Overview
Write from Dictation questions tests your ability to understand and remember the sentence you hear and type it exactly using correct spelling into the response box at the bottom of the screen. This is the last question type in the PTE Listening section.
Here are some key points about this task
- Each audio begins to play automatically after 7 seconds
- Each recording will be 3-5 seconds long and is played only once.
- The sentence played in the audio will contain around 8 to 12 words.
- In this listening test, you will answer 3 to 4 questions of this type.
- Partial credit scoring will be given.
- Your typed response is scored by counting the number of correct words. If all the words you typed are right and spelled correctly, then you’ll receive a maximum score for that item. If one or more words in your response are incorrect, you will lose points.

Before Listening
- You have 7 seconds before the audio plays to make yourself prepared.
- Place the cursor on the response box so that you are ready to type as you listen.
While listening
- Stay focused as you listen only once. Focus on the meaning of the sentence to remember easily.
- Type the sentence immediately into the response box so that you don’t forget it.
- If you cannot type fast in the response box, you can either take notes or write down the sentence using an Erasable Note board booklet and pen.
- After that, transfer the answers into the response box by typing.
After you listen
Once recording is finished and after typing your answers in the response box, make sure you check
- Usage of Capitalization
- Grammar
- Spelling and Punctuation
- Sentence Structure
