How should reading be taught ?

Learning to read demands intense and conscious effort compared to learning to speak. Researchers and educators know these difficulties so they thought about how children can learn to read effectively . No single method has triumphed. In the teaching community, there are a lot of debates happening on the topic of reading - which form of reading instruction could be effective. 

Three general teaching approaches put into test for the students to learn reading . One of the reading instructions is whole-word instruction. Children learn to recognise vocabularies by means of rote learning. It will help them to obtain other words over the period of time. 

Mostly, speakers learn language by understanding how each letter sounds different and what it means. This is considered as a second approach to learn a language which instructs the children to apply their knowledge of alphabets to sound out the words.

The whole-language method is a popular approach followed by most of the schools. This method instructs children to learn language based on their experience. For example, teachers will provide interesting books to children and encourage them to guess the unknown words by understanding the context of the paragraph or look for some clues in the stories to understand the words of the paragraph.  

Many teachers use the whole-language approach for their students because of its nature of intuitive appeal. Children enjoy reading by this method and students are more responsible for their learning than their teachers. During the 1990s, Americans accepted the whole-language instruction as this has lots of benefits. 

Linguists and Psychologists make an objection to American schools’ decision of abandoning the phonics. Research emphasized that letters and related sounds are necessary to understand in order to learn reading. Supporters of whole-language instruction claim that people understand the meanings of the words directly from the print rather than focusing on the sound of the words. Though Psychologists accept this claim, some believe that reading is all about mentally sounding out the words. Most people often confuse the homophones, it means they convert the series of letters into sounds in their mind. 

Numerous experiments have been done to evaluate the different approaches to teaching the reading skill. It was done with college students and then with school students. Two groups are divided for the experimental purposes. First group was instructed to read unfamiliar symbols such as Arabic words while the second group was instructed to read entire words, formed by the strings of Arabic letters. Afterwards, both groups were instructed to read the words formed by the original characters. It was found that the group who learned using the phonics performed better than those who learned to read the whole word.

Pottery production in ancient Akrotiri

Many technical aspects of pottery manufacture have been revealed at the site of prehistoric Akrotiri during the excavation. In the Greek city, pottery manufacture is one of the basic industries. But, still we don’t know how socio-economics and production was functioned and organised.

In Akrotiri, lots of pottery was found, which was manufactured from the late fifteenth century BC. Fifty different types of pots have been distinguished. The potteries that are found also serve functional purposes such as smaller containers, cooking pots, drinking vessels etc. There is a possibility that Akrotiri production was done by skilled craftsmen as those pottery have different shapes and are highly standardised. 

In Excavated areas pottery workshops or kilns can’t be found. Workshops might be located in the periphery of the site which is still not excavated. Pottery may be produced on an industrial scale as these have different versions of the same type. 

Increasing complexity of exchange systems and regional distribution might have pressured the Potters of Akrotirian. We can think of those potters as dedicated their whole time to manufacture pots for a high-production rate. In this way, one can assume that during the period of 1550-1500 BC, potteries have been mass produced and craftsmen have organised workshops. Still, it is unknown how pottery production was organised at Akrotiri. We derived entire knowledge and the conclusions from the ceramic material itself. 

As Akrotiri is one of the exchange-geared societies, the sense of units of quantity and a numerical system was developed. Though written records were not found, an existence of concepts of measurements , weight and number ensured by the archaeological evidence. Series of lead weights was found on site which are made in disc form indicating that standard measures have actually been operating in Akrotiri.

Irish Potato Famine

The ten years of potato famine during the period of 1845 caused the death of over 750,000 Irish People including of those people who tried to immigrate to the countries such as the United States and Canada. In Ireland, overpopulation is the main concern before the potato blight. The count of population in 1840 is found to be tripler than the population count of during 1550s. The potato crop was blamed for the overpopulation as it has all necessary nutrients for the people to survive. Ireland's population was reduced by quarter after the failed crop of 1845. The combination of Irish dependency on the potato crop, the inadequate relief efforts of the English and the British tenure system contributed to the reduction of Irish Population. 

It is unknown how exactly potatoes were introduced to Europe. It might have arrived on a Spanish ship during the 1600s. Europeans believed that potatoes came from the poisonous breed for more than 100 years.  It was not until Marie Antoinette wore potato blossoms in her hair in the mid-eighteenth century that potatoes became a novelty. By the late 1700s, the dietary value of the potato had been discovered, and the monarchs of Europe ordered the vegetable to be widely planted. Though  Marie Antoinette popularized the potatoes by wearing potato blossoms. The dietary value of the potato was discovered in the late 1700s, afterwards, the monarchs of Europe decided to plant the potato plants widely.  

The majority of the Irish population became dependent on the potato by 1800. It became normal for Irish potato farmers to consume more than 6 pounds of potatoes a day. Irish families stored potatoes for the winter use and also fed them to their cattles. This extreme dependency problematized the Irish people’s life after the potato blight. Many speculations on what causes the potato blight have been done but finally it was found that the main cause of the potato blight is an airborne fungus which travelled from Mexico. It destroys both the  potato crops and potatoes which are stored. 

The British tenure system prisoned the Irish people while the potato blight caused mass starvation. The English turned their focus to their colonial land holdings following the Napoleonic Wars of 1815. British landowners found that they can gain profits from these holdings by extracting the resources and charging huge amounts of rents and taxes to live on that land. Protestant landlords possessed 95 % of the Irish land under the tenure system, Plots were consistently divided into smaller parcels as Ireland population grew.
