How well do we concentrate?

People who have habits like reading while listening to music or finishing homework while watching TV are called multitaskers. Multitaskers are able to finish the two or more tasks simultaneously by dividing their focus. Nonetheless, a researcher in Psychology, Thomas Lehman believes that people can never do multiple things at the same time. The brain can only focus on one task, though a person is reading while listening to music. You will ignore some of the words in the music while you read the words in the book. When people complete two different tasks, they are actually dividing their focus. People focus less on their surroundings when they are listening to music. For example, we all have an experience that when we’re talking on the phone with friends, they might not respond properly. The reason could be that they are listening to other people or reading a text and don’t hear what we are saying. Lehman calls this phenomenon “email voice”.

Computers and its spin offs such as smartphones and cell phones have changed the world. Currently, most of the individuals use personal devices like a smartphone or a laptop, to read frequently, reading, watching or listening to virtual information. Multitasking occurs in our day to day life in this way. For instance, when you work, you work with your phone, typewriter and your colleagues could drop by anytime to inform you of something to you. In professional meetings, generally when one focuses and listens to one another, probably people have a cell phone on their lap, reading, silently communicating with other people. Cordless phones have increased multitasking. In the old days, if the traditional wall phone rings, the housewife needs to stop all the activities that she is doing and answer it. In the modern era, as we are having good technology, there is no need to stop our daily tasks.

Earl Miller, who is an expert at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, explored the prefrontal cortex, which controls the brain when the person is multitasking. Based on his study, what he found was that cortex size varies between species. He found that the cortex takes one third of the portion in the human brain. It is only 4 to 5 percent in dogs, and 15 percent in monkeys. In this way, we can understand that humans have a large cortex so they can be more flexible and accurate in his or her multitasking. Still, Miller was driven to find whether the cortex was truly processing information while doing two different tasks.
