Introduction 

I would like to talk about one of my favorite traditions in my country which are majorly followed in Gujarat, which is to crack the earthen pot which is hung on at a significant height. However, here I vividly remember that a few years ago there used to be competition in almost all areas. India is a diverse country and therefore, there are a lot of different traditions being followed in India. 

What is it?

There are two parts to this tradition. On the first day, everyone is supposed to prepare for the birth of lord Krishna. Everyone in the family stays awake till midnight and exactly at 12 am traditionally when lord Krishna was born, all of us are supposed to cheer mother Devaki and swing the statue of the infant child kept in the decorated swing.

Who takes part in it?  

Everyone in the family takes part in this tradition. The age of any person does not matter. Particularly in my family, we all have our designated tasks. My parents place all the required things which are essential for prayer at the designated place. My younger brother always has to prepare the food platter for god and I personally decorate the cradle for lord Krishna.

What activities are there? 

At 12 am everyone in the house has to sing lullabies for lord Krishna and swing him. We all have to pray and give strength to mother Devaki. 

And explain how you feel about it?  
I believe in lord Krishna a lot, every time during this tradition I feel a little more connected to him. The tales of god Krishna that my mother narrates to me every time, make me honor my culture more.

Conclusion

I feel that these traditions rejuvenate me every time. It fills me with the hope that the wishes and prayers will get fulfilled.

Introduction 

There are many traditions and festivals in India. Out of which many die out and some still have the same importance. The one which I would like to talk about is “matki fod”.

What is it?  

The famous tradition in my country is “matki fod”. God Krishna used to love butter and in order to devour it, he used to steal butter from his neighborhood. So to save the butter of the house everyone in his village decided to tie up the pot of butter at a height. Lord Krishna, being young, made a plan to reach the pot with the help of his friends. 

Who takes part in it?  

Everyone regardless of gender takes part in this. But, climbing on the human tower and being a part of the tower takes a toll on everyone's physical strength, hence usually only the young and fit people take part in this activity.

What activities are there? 

A person who enacts as lord Krishna climbs on the human tower as well as he is supposed to crack open the earthen pot with the help of the human tower. The pot is at a significant height, it is very difficult to reach there. The background is full of music, everyone is dancing to the beats of the songs.

And explain how you feel about it?  

It is an amazing event, it marks the start of all the coming festivals. Jamasntami usually fills me with enthusiasm. The aura that this tradition brings is unmatchable. It just fills colors in my dull life.
 
Conclusion 
At last, I would just like to say that Janmashtami is close to my heart, as I am able to spend a great quality time with my family and friends.

Introduction 

Here, I would like to describe a tradition which I love the most, that is “Hola Mohalla”. This tradition is usually celebrated widely in the north part of India.

What is it?  

“Hola Mohalla” is the tradition in my country celebrated widely which means the charge of the army. This tradition shows the strength of the army, this was traditionally celebrated to fill up the enthusiasm in all the civilians. By showcasing the martial arts skills, they gave solace to all the people that their army is worthy enough to protect them.

Who takes part in it?  

All the male members of Nihang Sikhs, take part in this tradition. Nowadays, even a few females join this, but the number of males has always outgrown. Rest others, participate either in the entertainment group, by performing the cultural folk dance or some of the play drums and other such instruments. 

What activities are there?

In Hola Mohalla, the Nihang Sikhs usually perform various martial arts stunts, while the audience cheers them for their strength. They portray all the training they have been through till then. There are many street vendors present over there to keep the public entertained with delicious and mouth-watering food available on their carts.

And explain how you feel about it?  

I really feel proud being a Sikh, the culture that I belong to has so much strength. I immensely feel connected to all the people over there. At this time of the year, all the nearby villages gather, and thus, I am able to meet new people every year.

Conclusion 

There are an ample amount of things that keep me entertained each time I celebrate Hola Mohalla. It is the perfect blend of music, martial arts, and my favorite, which is traditional Punjabi food.

Introduction 

Being a half Malayali, I would like to put forth the traditional boat race which is conducted in the major parts of Kerala. I live here in Gujarat but every year during this festival I visit my village house.

What is it?  

This tradition is celebrated in my country is “chingam”, which is in the month of August and September. There are many awards which are kept for the winners. As Kerala is close to the shore of this festival, most of the people here are fishermen and this tradition gives them a platform to show their skills, which they have achieved over the years.

Who takes part in it?  

All the people who wish to take part can do so, but this boat race is very competitive, thus only a mature group of fishermen take part in this competition. The rest are spectators, all the group have their own cheering charm which is recited by their supporters.

What activities are there? 

The participants of a group sit in one boat and they start rowing immediately after the traditional horn is blown. They all paddle the war canoes which are also known as the snake boats. The first three to reach the finish line receive a handsome amount of prize with honor from the crowd. Particularly in my village, regardless if the participants of our community win or lose, we cheer them on and shower flowers on them when they come back.

And explain how you feel about it?  

My home is constructed in such a way that I can see the whole competition from my terrace, with that being mentioned, all my neighbors come to my place. The feeling of unification with all the members of my community is unparalleled.

Conclusion 

Thus, I would like to summarize my Vallam kali tradition by expressing gratitude due to my belonging, its popularity, and the deep meaning it portrays.

They fill in happiness in our mundane lives. All of us usually have a monotonous life, festivals can be a break from this. Traditions can add fun to a festival, for the young it gives a purpose to join these activities and understand the culture as well. 

2. What is the difference between festivals that are celebrated now and in the past?

In the past, the traditions were very restricted, at times even there were events of racism that were recorded in the past. People did not wish to upgrade with the new way of living. Now there are hardly any constraints, anyone who is participating in the festival is able to enjoy it to the fullest.

3. Do you think festivals like Christmas are replacing traditional festivals in your country?

Yes, these festivals have a special place in our hearts. We all celebrate these festivals, there are many parties in which we celebrate Halloween, Christmas, and other such events. We are happy to address and attend such functions. All of us not only attend the functions but also opt to understand the western culture.

4. Do you think it is wrong for children to not celebrate traditional festivals?

I perceive that it is surely incorrect to drift young children away from their traditions. In my opinion, traditions teach a young mind some morals and virtues. These slowly seep into the juvenile minds, this way they will learn these important skills very easily.

5. Do you think teens should learn about traditions?

They are the future of our nation, if they do not endorse our culture, the coming generation might not even be able to know any traditions in our culture. The religion that we belong to will die-out very soon.

6. Do you think the traditions in your country are restricted especially for women in any sense?

In my country, there are many orthodox people who curb the enjoyment of all the traditions. But there is a slow and steady change that we can witness. Women are usually the one who were traditionally not even given the right to perform their own folk dance like garba in public. But a few advancements are in progress towards a brighter future.
