Exams to Study Abroad after 12th
Entrance exams are an important part of the admission process in studying abroad. The exams vary according to the country, college, and programs that you choose. Apart from clearing the 12th boards, the student has to go through the process of clearing the entrance exams to study abroad.
There are standardized tests and language skills tests such as SAT, GRE, GMAT, IELTS, and TOEFL. These exams are mandatory for getting a degree abroad and scholarships. The staff in Kanan international train their students in a way that they ace their exams confidently.
The exams you need to appear for to study abroad after 12th:
SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test)
The college board is in charge of conducting the SAT. This is a written test with a scale of 200-800 scoring points. There are a total of 154 questions with a given time of 3 hours, and with the essay, the exam time is 3 hours and 50 minutes.
The exam is usually conducted five times a year in March, May, August, October, and December. The SAT exam fees vary according to the country the student is willing to study. Most of the time the fees used to be around Rs.6200 - 7000 INR. The Kanan team offers one of the best SAT coachings in the country. PTE (Pearson Test of English Academic)
Pearson VUE conducts the PTE. The exam allocates separate marks for reading, writing,and listening with a total of 75 marks. Every task consists of 25 marks with 9 sections. PTE is a computer-based exam with a duration of 3 hours.
The standard PTE exam fee is Rs. 13300 INR. The PTE general exams are conducted around five times a year. Major universities and colleges in countries like the United Kingdom, The USA, New Zealand, Australia, and Canada accept students with a good score in the PTE.
GRE (Graduate Record Examination)
The Educational Testing Service conducts the GRE for undergraduate admissions in colleges. The result of the GRE is valid for up to 5 years. The exam is assessed based on topics like quantitative reasoning, verbal reasoning, and analytical writing.
The score scale is 130-170, 130-170, 0-6 respectively. The GRE is a computer-based exam conducted for 3 hours and 45 minutes. The exam fee for the GRE general test in India is around Rs. 15,800 INR.
IELTS (International English Language Testing System)
IDP India conducts IELTS in India. IELTS is required in English-speaking countries like Australia, UK, New Zealand, USA, and Canada. It’s the only English language test approved by UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) for visa applicants applying both outside and inside the UK, but the exam itself is not compulsory.
The exam assesses the candidates’ listening, reading, speaking, and writing skills with a duration of 2 hours and 45 minutes.
The score range is on a scale of 1-9. The listening (30 minutes), reading (60 minutes) and writing (60 minutes) tests will be conducted on the same day while the speaking assessment (11-14 minutes) can be scheduled up to a week before or after the other assessments.

TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)
The TOEFL exam for India is conducted by Educational Testing Service (ETS) for candidates who are willing to pursue higher education abroad. TOEFL scores are accepted worldwide by universities in the US, Canada, New Zealand, UK, Australia, and across Europe and Asia. The exam pattern comprises four sections - reading, listening, speaking, and writing.
The exam duration is around 3 hours. Each section has a score range of 0-30 and the total score range is 0-120. It is a computerized test but the paper-based exam is available for places with the unavailability of the internet and this mode of examination does not have a speaking assessment due to the lack of technological requirements.
Due to the pandemic, ETS introduced home-based exams TOEFL iBT home edition due to the unavailability of test centers. The test fee is around 13,736 INR($185) for the iBT version and 13,365 INR ($180) for the paper-based version.
GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test)
GMAT is conducted by GMAC (Graduate Management Admission Council) in India. The test is taken to get into graduate management programs such as MBAs, MS courses, and Masters in finance-related courses.
The exam has wide acceptability around the world. The exam pattern comprises four sections, Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, Analytical Writing Assessment, and Integrated Reasoning. Candidates are provided with the flexibility to choose the order of the section they wish to attempt.
The duration of the exam is 3 hours and 30 minutes including test instructions and two optional 8-minute breaks. GMAC has provided the convenience to attempt the test from their homes or near test centers.
The exam is conducted around the year and slots can be booked according to the candidate’s convenience.
The exam can be retaken after every 16 days and can be attempted up to 5 times in a year given 8-lifetime attempts. Candidates can book an online appointment until 24 hours before the available test slot. The exam fee is around 18,562 INR($250). The exam score range is 200 -800.
ACT (American College Testing)
ACT is conducted by ACT, Inc in India. ACT is for students applying for admissions in undergraduate schools based in the US and Canada. It is a computer-based test conducted in test centers across India.
The ACT is conducted only a few times a year between September to July for which international students can apply online only. The exam has no age or educational eligibility criteria since it’s mostly for high school students.
The basic registration fee for the exam costs around 11,125 INR($ 150) with an additional writing fee of around 1,224 INR($16.50). International students are charged with International fees costing 3,785 INR approx ($51).
The exam has four sections namely, English(45 minutes), Math(60 minutes), Reading(35 minutes), and Science(35 minutes) with an optional writing section(40 minutes) for which students are not scored.
The total exam duration is 3 hours and 35 minutes with a total of 215 questions. Each section is scored on a scale of 1-36. The composite score is the average of all four tests. The writing section does not affect the composite score. ACT scores are valid for five years.
