In the IELTS speaking cue card section the examiner will provide you with a Task Card, more commonly known as an IELTS cue card. The cue card will have the topic in which you have to talk about. You will be given 1 minute to prepare your notes and the examiner will ask you to talk for 1-2 minutes, over all this part lasts for 3-4 minutes. Followed by the IELTS speaking part 3 comes, that is the follow-up question round.

Model answer 1 - Describe something that you picked up that was thrown by someone else

Introduction:

People should do their best to ensure that they dispose of the waste properly. If not it will cause environmental pollution and physical injuries. Here I am going to share about the thing which I picked up that was thrown by someone. 
 
Where was it?

It was a fine morning while I was walking down the crowded street. I noticed a shard of broken glass in the street near the dustbin. There were some animals like dogs and cats roaming around. Well, my intention is that those animals should not be injured by those glass particles.

When was it picked up?

As soon as I saw those glass particles, I took those broken glass pieces with the help of my handkerchief. I found that there were many people crossing the street but no one came forward to take this broken glass piece. 
  
What did you do after you picked it up?

I wrapped those glass pieces in the handkerchief and packed tightly with the help of some plastic covers and threw it in a specially-made glass-disposal box that is capable of storing the sharp shards which are in the nearby bus stop. 

How did you feel?

At that moment, I felt like I had saved animals from getting injured. I felt pride and responsible for the action I did. I felt that I need to bring awareness to the people not to throw the broken glasses as such without proper disposal measures. 

Conclusion:

Seeing those broken glass pieces in the street made me realize how the people are being irresponsible in taking care of the environment, street dogs and cats. I think people should come forward to keep our environment clean.

Model answer 2 - Describe something that you picked up that was thrown by someone else

Introduction:

In our daily life, we often come across situations where we find things which are discarded by others. Here I am going to share about my experience where I happened to pick up an item that someone else had thrown away. 

Where was it?

This happened when I was waiting for my bus, I found a bag full of used clothes which was thrown by someone else. Early I thought it was a torn dress, later I checked that it was used cloth but in good condition. 

When was it picked up?

First I was hesitant to take the bag, because I wasn't sure whether it was a discarded bag or it was left by someone else. Later a person who is near to me told me that this was thrown by someone else while going in the car. Immediately I took that bag and decided to do something with it.

What did you do after you picked it up?

I took that bag and I started searching for people who were on the roadside. After some time I found a woman who was carrying a 2 years old baby and selling pens and stickers. I went near and gave that bag to her.   

How did you feel?

It was a mix of emotion. At the beginning I felt sad that I was giving them some used clothes . After seeing the happiness in the faces of the women and the kid, I felt very happy. 

Conclusion:

After seeing this I came to know that small things can bring a big smile in someone's life. After this incident I started helping orphan people with new things which I can afford. And I felt everyone should come forward to help others  in some way.

Model answer 3 - Describe something that you picked up that was thrown by someone else

Introduction

Upcycling is the process of transforming waste products into new materials to be of greater quality. Here I am going to share about my experience in where I happened to pick up an item that someone else had thrown away. 

Where was it?

This incident happened about 2 months ago, me and my friend were planning to open a new cafe in one of the busy areas. After a few days we decided to purchase all the equipment and needs for the shop as unique.

When was it picked up?

When we were in search of a distinctive table for our shop. At that point we came up with the idea of creating a chair and table using discarded materials. Consequently, I decided to utilize a car tire that had been discarded by one of my neighbors to construct the chairs and tables.

What did you do after you picked it up?

With those tires we started making a beautiful chair and table by using some tools. The output came out really so good and it looked as unique as I wished. I made 2 chairs and tables with those tires.

How did you feel?

I felt extremely happy with what I made. All my friends and customers have appreciated my work. At last we made our shop as per our wish, keeping all unique things. Also I made a few flower vases with waste glass bottles and flowers with plastic bottles and tin cans into lanterns. 

Conclusion:

Reusing the waste materials helps to lessen the amount of waste dumped in landfills, lower greenhouse gas emissions and preserves natural resources. 

Model answer 4 - Describe something that you picked up that was thrown by someone else

Introduction:

There are many reasons why recycling is important. Not only can it help reduce the need for harvesting raw materials, it saves energy, prevents pollution and more. Here I am going to share my experience in picking up a waste that was thrown by someone else. 

Where was it?

This incident took place in my own house. My mother was managing an eatery in the front yard of our home. She would cook and give meals for college hostel students. Everyday I observe that my mother was using numerous vegetables and disposing of all of the leftover  vegetable scraps in the trash bin. 
 
When was it picked up?

As she was throwing it in the dustbin, I made a choice to gather all of that leftover vegetable material in a receptacle in order to create fertilizer for my garden. My garden was approximately 100 square feet, and it was home to a variety of vegetable and flower plants that I had planted. 

What did you do after you picked it up?

I collect all those vegetable waste in a big container and dump it in a corner of my home backyard. It is a process of spreading a thin layer in low-lying areas and a layer of soil is added on the top and the waste starts to decompose. 
 
How did you feel?

After a few months of collecting those vegetables I got more than 15 kgs of fertilizer and I started using it in my terrace garden. After using these fertilizers I saw a visible change in the taste of vegetables and growth of plants. 
 
Conclusion:

Composting food waste is an excellent way to create a valuable resource of gardening and farming. Compost is a natural fertilizer rich in nutrients that promote plant growth. 

IELTS speaking part 3 - Describe something that you picked up that was thrown by someone else follow up questions.

In part 3 of the speaking test the examiner will ask further questions which are connected to the topics discussed in part 2. We have given some follow up questions related to “Describe something that you picked up that was thrown by someone else”. It will help you for your major exams.

Yes, small actions can make a big impact, and it’s important not to be discouraged by the actions around us. Each small step can make a positive environment and those small actions can build momentum and inspire meaningful change. 

2. Why do you think that picking things is important?

Picking things up is important to being healthy. It leads to a healthier and more hygienic environment. Also it plays a crucial role in promoting health, well-being, and better quality of life. Additionally picking things that are dropped by others may help animals, because when animals ingest garbage, it may block their airways or fill up their stomachs, causing them to choke or starve to death. 

3. Do people throw things intentionally?

Sometimes, people may intentionally throw things as a form of aiming to draw attention to society and sometimes the release of tension that brings us to acts of aggression when we’re mad in thought to be stress-relieving, makes us throw things intentionally.

4. Have you experienced a similar situation where you must pick and expect something?

Yes, I remember the time during my school days I participated in a camp which was organized by the FASS ( Friends Affiliation for Social Service) team. Every day in that camp we had to clean any one place like a temple, rivers, bus stop or school. We noticed a positive change in that atmosphere after the cleanup. The act of picking up trash beautified the area and fostered a sense of unity and responsibility. 

5. What is the main purpose of waste management?

The aim of waste management is to reduce the dangerous effects of such waste on the environment and human health. Reducing waste will not only protect the environment but will also save on costs or reduce expense for disposal.
