IELTS speaking part 3 - Describe something you own which is very important to you follow up questions

Follow-up questions for “Describe something you own which is very important to you” are given below. In the actual exam, the IELTS speaking part 3 - follow up question session is conducted for about 4-5 minutes where you have to discuss questions about a general topic or question on your cue card.

1. What kind of things give status to people in your country?
"Status" is a tricky word to pin down because it means different things to different people. In our society, many associate it with big houses, high-paying jobs, fancy cars, stylish homes, advanced degrees, fame, and expensive gadgets. Some prioritize material wealth over ethics for social standing, but a few see status in a different light.

2. Have things changed since your parents’ time?
I think it has not changed significantly and earthly possessions and money were determining factors for having social status during my parent's time as well. However, they also considered someone's character and morality for social status than we do today.

3. Are people in modern time more focused on their career than the past?
In today's world, people prioritize career growth due to population rise, competition, and materialism. Family and moral values are still important, but sustaining in the modern workplace requires a strong focus on one's career.

4. Do you think advertising influences what people buy?
Advertisements have a powerful influence on us as consumers. We're constantly exposed to ads, and they shape our preferences. Familiarity from ads impacts our choices, often leading us to buy products we've heard or seen advertised, sometimes even things we don't truly need.

5. What makes us buy things we do not need? Why is so?
We live in a materialistic world where we have plenty of options. The emergence of the throwaway society has further fueled our habit of buying more than we actually need. We are never happy and with the frequent release of new and improved electronics and household items, we are tempted to buy things we could do without just fine.

6. Should advertisers be allowed to track our online activities?
Privacy is important. Advertisers want to track us for personalized ads, but we should set boundaries to protect our data and follow safe-browsing practices. Balancing ads and privacy is key. However, we should be wary of this tracking mechanism and avoid being targeted by following the safe-browsing policies. There should definitely be a boundary to restrict advertisers and brands to get our private data.
