Talk about a time when you gave advice to someone - Sample 1

Introduction

It is human nature to offer advice when loved ones are struggling or need help. Many like and follow, however, many do not. Even I have a habit of offering advice to my friends and close ones.

Who did you give advice to?

I often don't give advice to anyone unless they ask me for an opinion or assistance. One fine day, my close friend called me and I noticed that she was confused. I asked her about the problem and she replied that she was worried about choosing between passion and commitment.

What was the advice? and Why did you give the advice?

Actually, she has been my close friend for the past 12 years and her name is Priya. She is very much interested in dance, however, she is working in a private company for her financial needs. She called me to get my opinion on a new opportunity. Though interested in dancing, she hesitated to take up the opportunity due to her job. She was confused when she called me. I explained to her the importance of her passion and the opportunity. I advised her to make use of the opportunity.

How was it helpful and how did he/she feel about it?

Literally, she was in a big confusion while calling me. Then, I explained to her the situation and the value of the opportunity. I suggested that she do what she likes. By the end of the call, she had clarity about what she wanted to do next. And she thanked me for my suggestion.

Conclusion

It's a great feeling when our loved ones ask us for suggestions on their new moves in life. I was very happy and satisfied that I made her clear.

Talk about a time when you gave advice to someone - Sample 2

Introduction

It is always better to take advice from experienced people or a third person rather than make a wrong decision. Here I would like to share the time I gave advice to my sister.

Who did you give advice to?

Usually, I talk to my sister on the phone and we share everything with each other. In each of our phone calls, she never hung up without talking about her career on hold. One day, I made her realise that she wasn't doing what she wanted.

What was the advice? and Why did you give the advice?

My sister got married two years back and she has a girl child. Before marriage,  she was very focused on her career.  But later she got more responsibilities in her husband's house. After having a child, she didn’t even have time to think about her career.  After the birth of the child, there is no time to even think about her career. But she was very worried when sharing it with me. I advised and motivated her to take her career to the next level.

How was it helpful and how did he/she feel about it?

After taking my advice, she got permission from her house and initiated to restart her career. I was so happy that she was finally going to do what she desired. Now, she is very successful in her field and meanwhile she is also managing her married life and taking care of her child.

Conclusion

Life is to do what we desire and what we deserve. Everyone should know how to balance both family and career.

IELTS Speaking Part 3: Follow up Questions

Once finished with the IELTS speaking cue card task, you will be asked some follow up questions related to the given cue card topic. So, we have included some possible Talk about a time when you gave advice to someone follow ups below to facilitate your speaking preparation.

1. What kind of advice do parents give to their children?

There is a saying that one's good or bad habits and behaviours depend on how one's parents bring them up. So, every parent has a responsibility to guide their children to learn good things. Parents give advice to children on various matters like studies, choice of friends, play, food habits etc.

2. How do experts give advice to others?

Professionals in any field are experienced and knowledgeable and have the ability to lead others. For example, if we approach a doctor for any health problem, he will understand why we are suffering and what is the solution to that problem. Based on that, he/she will give us advice on what to do and how to do it.

3. What advice do parents give to teenagers about making friends?

In my opinion, advising children and even people above 20+ years old is less difficult as compared to teenagers. Because this is a risky age to be easily misled by bad friends. So, it is crucial and challenging for parents to keep them away from bad mates. Parents monitor their children’s activity and moreover, they want to meet friends to know their behaviour. It helps the parents to avoid their child's bad partner and stay away from their child.

4. How is it helpful to ask for some advice before making a decision?

It is always best to ask for some expert advice or think twice before making any important decision. Because it helps to avoid some risks and wrong moves. Discussion with knowledgeable people will give you some clarity.

5. Is it good to let children make their own decisions?

If I were to answer this question, I would say that allowing children to make their own decisions is not commendable. Because they are new to this world and have no experience in anything. Therefore, they need the help of parents, guardians and teachers while making any decision.
