Follow the steps given below to understand how to write a proper Table Chart Task 1 essay.

Step 1: Analyse the question

The IELTS Academic Writing task 1 essay question will contain some instructions and a description of the chart. You have to look at the chart and determine what type of chart it is and what the question is.

Example:
The table below gives information about the production of cocoa beans in six regions between 1992 and 1998.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

The question contains:

  1. Sentence 1 - description of the table
  2. Sentence 2 - instructions to be followed
  3. Graphic - table chart

The first sentence consists of the description of the chart. The second sentence is a question which asks you to select and write the main features of the chart and to make relevant comparisons.

Step 2: Identifying the main features

The table contains a lot of information and your duty is to pick the main features from the table. Identify the units of measurements, trends in the information, similarities, differences etc.

Cross-check the table with these questions:

  • What are the units of measurements?
  • What are the time periods?
  • What can you learn from the title and any labels?
  • What is the most obvious trend?
  • Are there any notable similarities?

The table chart shows different regions and years between 1992 and 1998. The numbers that are given in the table are the number of tons of cocoa that was produced in each year in each region of the world. Choose the keypoint and trends from the data to write your essay.

Main feature 1: The production numbers in Asia and Oceania are increasing steadily.
Main feature 2: The production of cocoa in North and Central America remains the same in 1992 and 1998.

Step 3: Writing an introduction (Paragraph 1)

In the introduction essay, you only have to paraphrase the question. Write an intro about the data in the table. You can use different words or synonyms and restructure the sentence.

Example:
Question - The table below gives information about the production of cocoa beans in six regions between 1992 and 1998.

Introduction -
The table shows the data of cocoa beans production in tons between the years 1992 and 1998 in 6 different regions in the world.

Step 4: Writing an overview (Paragraph 2)

In the 2nd paragraph, use the main features from the table and mention it. You don't have to go much into detail. If you can make any comparisons using the data given, you can mention it here. You can use around 40 words or 2 to 3 sentences to write the overview. Use relevant words and spell the words correctly.

Example:
The data shows that the cocoa production in Asia and Oceania is increasing steadily every 2 years. In other regions the production numbers are very unsteady. The production in Africa has dropped significantly to 25000 tons in 1998.

Step 5: Writing the 1st Detail paragraph

The 3rd paragraph is the first body paragraph where you will write about the table chart data in detail. Here you will use more data from the table as evidence to support what you write. For this question, you can describe the first main feature in this paragraph.

Example:
In the Asia and Oceania regions, the production of cocoa beans has increased over the years. The figures in Oceania are not as high as that in Asia. The production in Asia grew from 119000 tons in 1992 to 436000 tons in 1998. Whereas in Oceania, the production of cocoa was only 40000 tons in the year 1992 and 77000 tons in 1998.

Step 6: Writing the 2nd Detail paragraph

This will be the last paragraph in your essay. Here you can describe the second main feature in the table chart. In this paragraph too you should take data from the table and write the essay to support your statements.

Example:
Meanwhile the data for North and Central America shows that the production of cocoa beans in 1992 and 1998 are the same. For this region the production almost halved in 1994 and then steadily increased till 1998. While other regions have the almost the same production of cocoa beans every year, Africa faced a huge drop in cocoa beans production in 1998.
