There is a long-awaited question among people, including parents and teachers, whether art is an essential subject or a waste of time for children at school. I’m going to discuss both viewpoints and give my opinion.
Art subjects did not add value to the school curriculum. It keeps students out of focus and idle. Other important subjects would benefit students significantly in the future. Science, Mathematics, Geography, etc., are of great importance in getting seats in premier universities. On the other hand, students studying arts do not lead to high-salaried jobs or a successful career. Many artists struggle to pay their bills and go for other menial jobs.
Conversely, art is a unique subject that includes music, drama, dance, poetry, painting, drawing, etc. Art subjects enable students to tap into their creativity and imagination. It soothes their mind and enhances motor skills, hand-eye coordination and neural connections. Unlike STEM subjects, learners in an Art class indulge themselves in physical activity to strike a balance. For instance, singing a song or composing music brings positive emotions to students. Studying art naturally improves performance in all major and allied subjects. World-famous artists like Pablo Picasso, Ludwig van Beethoven and Michael Jackson are examples of learning art at a young age. It not only developed skills but also self-identity.
In the end, Art subjects are essential for children at school. With passion and right guidance, arts subjects would help them improve their physical and mental health. Hence, it is no longer a waste of time.

Model Sample Answer 2 Band 7.5 - Some people think that art is an essential subject for children at school while others think it is a waste of time. Discuss both views and give your opinion.
Photography, drawing, literature, and stage play are some of the interesting Art subjects taught to children in schools. Whether it is an essential subject or a waste of time is discussed here.
Art subjects are dragging students from pursuing their dreams. By engaging with musical instruments, paintbrushes or dancing floors, students are unnecessarily distracting themselves. Art classes aren’t considered essential in this competitive world. Students with strong skills in mathematics, critical thinking and problem-solving are in demand and secure high-salaried jobs in a short period. Students from Art subjects take at least a decade to develop their skills. It makes them highly emotional and lacks self-confidence. Moreover, most students taking Arts tend to get underpaid.
Besides the above factors, Art subjects are mind-boggling to students at school. Art courses make students delve into a fantasy world. It allows them to apply their imagination and bring new ideas to the floor. Once students are highly proficient in their arts, they earn respect and recognition from a vast audience. Surprisingly, students who do not perform well in academics do exceptionally well in creative arts. They compete with other students through inter-school competitions and eventually become professional artists. Since Art subjects create a calm and good vibe, students find it tranquillisation.
Overall, Arts subjects are essential for students in schools. It opens new opportunities to explore, like filmmaking, editing, media, journalism, and much more. In fact, both parents and teachers encourage students to indulge in other creative activities and develop their talents simultaneously.

Model Sample Answer 3 Band 7 - Some people think that art is an essential subject for children at school while others think it is a waste of time. Discuss both views and give your opinion.
Art education in schools is always a question of doubt among academicians and psychologists. Even in public, some people think that art is necessary for children, while others think it’s a mere distraction. Before coming to a conclusion, let’s see both sides and my personal view in the end.
Art subjects are quite explicit. Children can easily understand what art is all about, whether it's digital art, design, storytelling, acting, directing, writing, etc. However, science and other subjects require certain knowledge to understand. Children find other subjects difficult to grasp and become demotivated. To keep them motivated and increase their interest in school, art subjects should be a part of the curriculum. Consequently, students are encouraged and perform better in other subjects as well. In a way, students practice their artistic skills daily and become experts. They also start training others and earn a lump sum of money. With passion and hard work, some children become celebrities and inspire others through their artistic talents.
When it comes to negative aspects of Art subjects in school, there are plenty. Children attend art subjects to relax and gossip with their friends. They’re physically present but mentally absent. Sometimes, tutors themselves keep students lazy without giving them any tasks. Moreover, teachers would not give individual attention and do not make sure everyone in the classroom is attentive. To overcome this, school management must keep Art subjects as optional to avoid waste of time.
In conclusion, Art subjects have both advantages and disadvantages. Depending on schools and their perception, the art subject will become a life-changing experience or destroy young kids’ precious time.

Model Sample Answer 4 Band 6.5 - Some people think that art is an essential subject for children at school while others think it is a waste of time. Discuss both views and give your opinion.
Some people assume that art is an critical part of the school curriculum, irrespective of its value to children. But some people think that art is meaningless and has no value in a formal education. In this essay, I will discuss both the views and tell which one is more important.
Art is a traditional subject, taking us back to ancient times. Many art forms like ceramics, sculpture, mime, circus arts, etc., are becoming extinct across the world. To keep it alive, we must bring art subjects as essential for children at school. It induces interest among children and gives them opportunities to develop their inherent skills. In this day and age, millions of people start teaching art to their children whether in school or home. It increases cultural awareness, academic performance, self-confidence, and other psychological factors. Astonishingly, some parents even stop school education and start indulging their children in art classes full-time.
Nevertheless, art education has some downfalls too. Children need to spend at least a year's time to lay a strong foundation on any art. So whatever they have learnt in school is of no use. It’s just to keep them occupied with something. There’s no competition to prove their talent. There’s no reward or recognition to encourage students. Pathetically, other subject teachers borrow art classes to complete their portion and there’s no vice versa. So it’s obvious to think that art classes in school are nothing but a waste of time.
Finally, both points are valid and need to be considered while making decisions. To gain a holistic learning experience, arts should be included in school education. It creates various avenues for performing arts, building networks, fame and everything.
