Model Sample Answer 1 Band 8 - Some people think that the best way to reduce crime is to give longer prison sentences. Others, however, believe there are better alternative ways of reducing crimes” Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Nowadays, crime rates are inclined and there has been a discussion on possible steps that could be implemented to tackle the scenario. However, a debate has arisen between two groups of citizens. While the majority thinks that an extended imprisonment would be the best way, some are of the opinion that better options are required to be explored and implemented.

To begin with, long-term incarceration is a practical and effective method of removing criminals from society. Thinking about a long-term prison term will deter someone from committing an offense psychologically. Elaborating on it, they will consider a wretched life in prison before engaging in any unlawful activity. Especially, crimes like murder, rape, or arson which are completely the intention of the criminal deserve severe penalties. Thus, extended prison punishment would work in reducing crime rates.

However, it is not completely acceptable to consider long imprisonment as the best way to tackle the situation. Criminals are humans, after all, any living being is capable of adapting to changes, small or big. Illustrating it, being in jail for a long period can crush them into guilt and aggression, on the other hand, organizing rehab centers or labor training can help them engage themselves in productive activity. This will not only imply productivity but also flexibility in switching aspects of life.

In conclusion, lengthy prison sentences are an effective way to stop people from committing crimes but to reduce the overall crime rate, a change in criminal perception along with a chance to show abilities to do something productive is necessary and effective too. I strongly believe that criminals should be provided with different ways to improve themselves rather than putting an end to his/her life for a long time.

Model Sample Answer 2 Band 7.5 - Some people think that the best way to reduce crime is to give longer prison sentences. Others, however, believe there are better alternative ways of reducing crimes” Discuss both views and give your opinion.

There are numerous negative effects on the country that could possibly result from rising crime. Long-term incarceration is seen to lessen this occurrence by some, although others claim that rehabilitation may assist lower the ratio. However, I will go over both points of view and then state my position.

To start with, crime rates are a major challenge to society as a whole. We need to identify the contributing elements to crime if we want to lower the rate. Social problems including a lack of possibilities in life, poverty, and low educational attainment might inspire people to engage in an illegal activity instead of just being motivated by malice. Hence exploring different ways to provide at least basic amenities to poor families, especially the criminal or culprits’ families could be very helpful. Moreover, charity organizations should be organized and promoted by the public sector, which supports the objectives of the culprits’ well-being.

However, there are many benefits of sentencing offenders to a longer prison period. A convincing argument for the incapacitating effect of prison is that while convicted, a criminal cannot commit more crimes in public. Because of the dread that this occurrence can inspire in other criminals, many people think that culprits should be punished with lengthy prison terms. In other words, if someone is informed of the severity of the penalty beforehand, it will deter them from committing any crimes.

To summarize, rates of crime shall be deduced by any means, but more efficient ways could be used rather than long prison sentences. Extended jail punishment can be considered effective for the short term but it cannot be called an idle way to improve the country’s position as far as crimes are concerned. Hence, reducing overall crime rates should be done by way of facilitating education and charity.

Model Sample Answer 3 Band 7 - Some people think that the best way to reduce crime is to give longer prison sentences. Others, however, believe there are better alternative ways of reducing crimes” Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Crime is a major issue that needs to be addressed nationwide, and all nations are working to do so. Whilst others in society feel that longer jail terms can help reduce crime, others disagree and contend that there are alternative, more effective solutions. This essay supports the claim that less harmful alternatives to locking individuals up in a cell include educating them and providing them with the means to support themselves. Both perspectives will be discussed in this essay.

To begin with, many people opine that criminals should be sentenced to imprisonment for a longer time than usual. I think this opinion must have arrived from a victim-conscious perspective where people have either witnessed an illegal deed or have actually been driven by looking at how its consequences affect other people. Basically, the motive behind this opinion is to set a message for other ill-motivated people so that further crimes may stop.

However, I think alternative approaches, including establishing suitable educational facilities and employment opportunities, can address the challenges far more successfully. Setting up a message would not win against setting up hope for similar culprits out there in society. Intricating it, the government should provide education in order to make them aware of their own abilities to achieve things by legal means. A little confidence could lift their hope to give another try to their journey.

In conclusion, Longer prison sentences undoubtedly induce fear in would-be offenders and deter them from committing crimes. However, my opinion is that it is far preferable to eradicate the primary source of crime by offering education and economic possibilities.

Model Sample Answer 4 Band 6.5 - Some people think that the best way to reduce crime is to give longer prison sentences. Others, however, believe there are better alternative ways of reducing crimes” Discuss both views and give your opinion.

The upsurge in crime rates across numerous countries in the twenty-first century is a problem for the entire planet. As a result, dread soon spreads among innocent bystanders, driving them to call for harsher penalties to be meted out to criminals. I place my opinions alongside the alternative methods because some people think that handing offenders lengthier prison terms will be more beneficial.

Longer prison terms for offenders have several advantages. The likelihood that the innocent will remain secure grows considerably the longer offenders who have caused serious harm to others such as theft, violence, arson, and murder are exiled from society. Through a variety of services offered inside, criminals will have the chance to get themselves rehabilitated while they are incarcerated. For instance, individuals should examine their own actions and educate themselves on how to avoid committing crimes again after being freed. Additionally, the lengthy prison term will serve as a deterrent to potential criminals.

Others, though, contend that there are more practical ways to lower crime. They maintain that if their life is spared after committing heinous crimes affecting human life, the tax that the public has already paid will be wasted. Therefore, a death sentence will serve as a potent deterrent to others, which will sharply reduce crime. It does not suggest that these threatening and aggressive individuals would be freed and allowed to roam the inner city. These individuals, in my opinion, may benefit the entire community while they are incarcerated.

In conclusion, arguments are quite convincing for and against lengthy imprisonment. Therefore, the government must investigate the best strategy out of all these excellent arguments in order to defend innocent lives from harsh and careless offenders. I think that the government should be concerned about the root causes and explore more practical and effective ways accordingly.
