Model Sample Answer 2 Band 7.5 - Some students take one year off between school and university. Do advantages outweigh disadvantages?

In this modern era, students take a leave of one year after school in order to fulfil their interests or to relax before entering university. Both the positives and negatives are discussed in the following paragraphs.

Examining the positives, students opt for a job after completion of their higher secondary education and the major reason for such an occurrence is the financial crisis as not every individual has secured financial aid. For instance, a student studying in government school scores above average but does not have sufficient money to get enrolled in the university finds an alternative as they take a break from studies and do a job in order to earn and save money for his/her education. This will not only form a greater impact on the resume but will also, upgrade a student’s profile when applied to university as more weightage is given to the students with job experience.

It cannot be overlooked that, in spite of the positive outcomes of taking a year's leave and doing a job but it can turn out to be in the wrong aspect as the student may lose interest in studies and their growth gets retarded. Where they may also have to continue the same job as before without an appropriate education he/she cannot climb the career ladder.

To put it in the nutshell, more and more individuals choose to take a year off before starting the university as it has expanded benefits but without any higher education, there is no scope to get a better job in order to fulfil daily basic necessities.

Model Sample Answer 3 Band 7 - Some students take one year off between school and university. Do advantages outweigh disadvantages?

It has been repeatedly observed that more and more students after passing school take a year off before entering the university. There are several advantages as well as disadvantages. Both aspects are discussed in the ensuing paragraphs.

On one hand, students nowadays travel abroad to learn about modern technology and the diversity of the field for them to study further after graduating from their native country. As the opportunities are more in the non-native nations with well-equipped tools which will not only increase theoretical knowledge but also will enhance practical skills.

Alternatively, this year gap can be stressful as all the peers would have moved on without wasting 365 days. This can have a detrimental impact on the pupils with a year off. They not only feel left out but also miss a lot of opportunities in that one year and as a result of this tension and pressure surge and it indirectly affects their health and coping with it gets more and more difficult. Therefore, students should keep themselves engaged in studies as it is a continuous process and students will only benefit from it.

To sum up, students should do productive work or learn their desired courses or activities to enhance their skills while taking a year off rather than sitting and observing others. This will not only make them regret their decision but will also see losing opportunities. By observing their friends without wasting a year and moving swiftly they will somewhat get to know that it was a mistake. Hence, this will form mental health issues and they will have to, unfortunately, continue the same.
