You should spend about 20 minutes on this task. The line graph shows visits to and from the UK from 1979 to 1999, and the bar graph shows the most popular countries visited by UK residents in 1999. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant. Write at least 150 words.

This line graph and bar chart illustrate two different data. First is the number of visits to and from the UK between 1979 and 1999. Second is the number of UK residents visiting the five popular countries in 1999. Units mentioned here are measured in millions.

Until 1985 there seemed to be an upward trend in the number of visits abroad by UK residents than the number of visits to the UK by the overseas residents. Then, a sudden rise from 20 million to 52 million was witnessed in the number of UK residents visiting different countries abroad.

From the bar chart, it is clear that the number of UK residents visited France more than any other country during 1999. The next country mostly visited by UK residents is Spain with almost 10 million.  

Likewise, 4 million and 3 million residents visited the USA and Greece in 1999. Whereas, Turkey would be the least visited country by UK residents with around 2 million.

The line graph talks about two factors: one is the number of residents from the UK going to other countries and the second is the number of overseas residents visiting the UK between 1979 and 1999. While the bar chart talks about how many UK residents visited the five most popular countries in 1999. Here, units are measured in millions of people. 

Largely, an upward trend was witnessed in the number of visits to and from the UK where more travel was made by UK residents to other countries than visits to the UK by overseas residents between 1979 and 1999. Interestingly, France tops the list of most popular countries to visit by UK residents in 1999. 

In 1979, around 15 million UK residents visited other countries. Then it increased exponentially to nearly  50 million in 1999. On the other hand, nearly 10 million overseas residents flew to the UK in the first year and gradually increased to 30 million in the final year. 

In 1999, nearly 10 million and approximately 9 million UK residents visited France and Spain respectively. Similarly, 4 million and 3 million residents visited the USA and Greece. Finally, Turkey would be the country visited by the least population of UK residents, around 2 million.

The main difference between a line graph and a bar chart is that a line graph comprises different points connected to a single straight line to illustrate even a small trend. Whereas, a bar chart comprises bars with various heights to highlight major figures and trends to the test-taker.
