Model Sample Answer 1 Band 8 - Government should spend money on railways rather than roads. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

When the topic of certain means of transportation arises there are divided views. Some are of the notion that money is to be spent on railways rather than on roads. I truly believe that the infrastructure of railways is to be maintained and should be spent more money on rather than roads. My opinion is elaborated further in the coming paragraphs.

To begin with, according to my perception, train commuters do not have to deal with the congestion that most road users experience and most importantly, trains can achieve much higher speeds than cars and other road transports. For instance, the British government recently disclosed plans to build a high-speed rail network that will link cities in the North of England with London. This will cut commute times in half and will help enable thousands of people from the Midlands to work in London.

In addition to this, locomotives tend to be less harmful to the environment than other means of transportation. This is due to the fact that a reduced amount of carbon is emitted as it prevents the use of hundreds of internal combustion engines by carrying hundreds of passengers. If more and more individuals travel through trains in comparison with other transportations then there will be a significant reduction in carbon emission.

All in all, it can be said that railways help the majority of the people to travel distances on time without any congestion as compared to road travel. Most importantly, as people travel in bulk through trains, as a consequence individual usage of vehicles will be reduced, which eventually decreases the detrimental effect of the carbon emissions.

Model Sample Answer 2 Band 7.5 - Government should spend money on railways rather than roads. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Nowadays, transportation has become a basic necessity for each and every individual of the nation. In my perception, I think that roads are to be built and refurbished as they are used more easily than the railways. My position is discussed below.

Firstly, roads act as the only public transport, as railroads cannot be built in some areas. Also, not all parts of the country can be reached by rail network. In fact, the majority of people commute to work or college on both the highway and the railroad. For example, you can take a bus or a car to the station but not a train to the office. If there are no roads or the roads available are under bad conditions then it would be very difficult to reach the destination.

Secondly, it is crucial for the government to conduct enough study on the geology of the region before making a development plan. Certainly, some areas have swamps and steep mountains, so some areas are not suitable for trains. Even if the government decides to proceed with the construction of the railways, the investment can be way too expensive. Thus, it is important to take the population preferences before investing in the construction of railroads and highways.

To sum up, and offer my position, I believe that roads can be built at the places where rails cannot run and therefore the legislation should spend more money on roads than railways. Lastly, it is the duty of the government to take decisions on the basis of population preferences.

Model Sample Answer 3 Band 7 - Government should spend money on railways rather than roads. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Infrastructure development is one of the basic requirements in any developing nation. Some are of the notion that money is to be spent on railways in comparison with roads. I agree that the government should spend more on railways as the longest distance can be travelled with the cheaper cost. Both sides are elaborated below.

To begin with, the foremost reason is that they can travel longer distances in shorter times. Majority of the people rely on trains to not only travel longer distances but they are also the cheapest means of transport. For instance, there are so many individuals who travel from one city to another in order to work as sometimes they have to cover 200kms or more. Therefore, railways help travel on time and are on budget.

Spendings on roadways, on the other hand, has several advantages as it is the national artery. For an efficient transportation of people and goods well-developed infrastructure is required. Moreover, in order to avoid accidents better roads are to be built. Also, nowadays as there is an increase in the traffic therefore the roads are to be broadened. Thus, the government should provide more monetary support for roads than railways.

To put it in the nutshell, it is true that roads are the basic necessities as people need to travel more frequently through it and are to be maintained to reduce accidents. To offer my position, I believe that railways are the best means of transportation as they are fast, reliable and cheaper.

Model Sample Answer 4 Band 6 - Government should spend money on railways rather than roads. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

In this day and age, for the development of a country it is most important to maintain the pathways of certain means of transport. They are crucial when it comes to contributing to the economy of the nation. I do not support the statement of the government spending money on railways rather than on roads. My justification is elaborated further.

The first and foremost reason for my opinion is that if the roads are developed well and are broadened then it will be convenient to transport goods with ease. Moreover, it saves a lot of time with no delay in comparison with trains if there’s a change in schedule. For example, if there’s a delay in the transport containing exotic vegetables and fruit it will not only delay in manufacturing, packing or delivery but it will also rot if delayed for more days and as a result of this there will be huge loss.

Furthermore, there are a lot of unconstructed roads and highways with non-working signal lights which has led to several accidents and deaths. As per a study conducted by Cambridge, the road network is the most used network in any nation. Thus, money is to be spent on roads rather than railways.

To sum up and offer my position, development of roads will reduce accidents and if there’s any delay in the transport it can be solved easily if it’s by road rather than trains. Lastly, the road network is the base of the nation and it is the duty of the government to give priority to roads than trains and spend more money on roads for the development of the country.
