Model Sample Answer 1 Band 8 - In Many Countries Plastic Containers Have Become More Common Than Ever And Are Used By Food And Drink Companies - Do you think the advantages of this outweigh the disadvantages
Plastic has become increasingly prevalent worldwide, being widely utilized in various industries including construction, textiles, household items, and personal use. Despite its numerous applications in our daily lives, there are certain drawbacks that can outweigh its benefits in the long term. In this article, I will discuss the disadvantages of plastic that surpass its advantages.
Using plastic containers has numerous benefits including their long-lasting nature, cost-effectiveness, affordability compared to steel or glass and reusability. The convenience and the low cost are the primary factors driving their purchase and usage. Additionally, plastic containers assist in preventing food freshness for extended periods, facilitating refrigeration of vegetables and fruits, and enabling easy transportation and distribution.
On the contrary, the disadvantages of plastic outweigh its advantages in the long term. One of the main drawbacks of utilizing plastic containers is their detrimental impact on the environment like it creates land pollution, it clog waterways and it drains blockages. Additionally, it takes over a century for plastic to degrade, posing potential harm to the earth and wildlife.
Moreover, the use of plastic containers poses risks to human health. The presence of a toxic chemical called Bisphenol-A, or BPA has additives in plastics that can disrupt hormone activity in the human body, affecting reproduction, growth, and cognitive function. Furthermore, consuming food from plastic containers can potentially lead to the development of cancer.
In conclusion, despite the affordability and convenience of plastic containers, they come with numerous drawbacks that can harm both the environment and human well-being.

Model Sample Answer 2 Band 7.5 - In Many Countries Plastic Containers Have Become More Common Than Ever And Are Used By Food And Drink Companies - Do you think the advantages of this outweigh the disadvantages
The use and disposal of plastic are causing numerous environmental problems, including air pollution by burning plastic waste and it creates a negative impact on freshwater and land. These environmental issues contribute to long-lasting problems such as climate change and global warming. Despite the many disadvantages, the production and consumption of plastic have not decreased.
In addition, the process of decomposition poses a risk. When organic materials such as animal waste, leaves, grass clippings, vegetables, and eggshells are disposed of in landfills, they produce methane, which is highly dangerous. In comparison to CO2, methane has a much greater impact on the atmosphere, reflecting up to 20 times more heat. On the other hand, plastic does not decompose and therefore it does not release any gasses. Instead, it gradually degrades and breaks down into smaller pieces known as microplastics.
In conclusion, despite the numerous benefits of plastic, I believe it is necessary to decrease its usage. This is because plastic is a man-made substance that harms the environment when used. To prevent this harm, we can choose not to use plastic in order to protect ourselves and the planet from pollution.
Model Sample Answer 3 Band 7 - In Many Countries Plastic Containers Have Become More Common Than Ever And Are Used By Food And Drink Companies - Do you think the advantages of this outweigh the disadvantages
Pollution on our planet is rapidly increasing due to various reasons. One major factor contributing to this issue is the extensive utilization of plastic. Although plastic offers certain benefits, it also poses numerous risks such as land pollution, health hazards, and detrimental effects on the environment. However, I disagree with the notion that the advantages of plastic outweigh the disadvantages.
Despite its numerous advantages, plastic has become ingrained in our society as single-use items like disposable food containers, cups, and plates. Research indicates that globally, one million plastic bottles are purchased every minute, and approximately five trillion plastic bags are used annually. Shockingly, half of all plastic produced is intended for one-time use purposes.
Single-use plastic refers to a specific kind of plastic that originates from a singular source and cannot be recycled or reused. This type of plastic is commonly utilized in the production of disposable items such as straws, shopping bags, and plates, which are intended to be discarded after a single use. Unfortunately, these plastic products take an extensive amount of time, often hundreds of years, to break down. As a result, a significant proportion of the plastic that has been manufactured throughout history still persists in some form today.
To sum up, it is evident that the utilization of plastic has emerged as a significant concern for our surroundings, and it is crucial to take immediate measures to tackle this problem. Rather than opting for plastic items such as plates, tea cups, or shopping bags, we can adopt organic alternatives like glasses made of mud, plates made of mud or dry leaves, and cotton bags.
Model Sample Answer 4 Band 6.5 - In Many Countries Plastic Containers Have Become More Common Than Ever And Are Used By Food And Drink Companies - Do you think the advantages of this outweigh the disadvantages
Plastic materials are being utilized by people more extensively in today’s society. They are found in various items such as food containers, shopping bags, water bottles etc. From my perspective, I believe that the use of plastic materials are like two sides of the same coin. It has both advantages and disadvantages which are evenly balanced and do not outweigh each other.
Plastic has numerous advantages, but it is not feasible to replace with alternative materials such as glass, mud, wood or steel. For example, plastic water bottles are more convenient and portable compared to glass or mud containers, which are either hazardous or not water-resistant. In industrial settings, plastic containers are preferred due to their affordability, unlike steel containers that can be expensive. As a result, using plastic containers or materials are more affordable, convenient and portable than other sources of containers.
However, the use of plastic materials is extremely dangerous. Unlike other materials, the plastic does not decompose naturally and can take thousands of years to break down. As a result, it accumulates as a layer on the surface, leading to pollution that harms marine wildlife, damages soil, and contaminates groundwater. These effects can have severe health consequences for both humans and animals. Marine animals, in particular, suffer greatly, with over 100 million dying each year solely due to plastic waste. Additionally, 100,000 marine animals die annually from becoming entangled in plastic.
Therefore, completely eliminating the use of plastic is not feasible at the moment. However, there are steps we can take to mitigate its impact. For instance, we can avoid using single-use plastics and instead opt for reusable alternatives like cotton bags when shopping. Additionally, we should be mindful of properly disposing of plastic waste in designated trash bins rather than littering. Furthermore, replacing plastic Tupperware with steel containers is another way to reduce plastic usage.
