‘Describe a family member you would like to work with’ is a cue card topic that is asked in Part 2 of the IELTS speaking test. IELTS speaking part 2 is an individual long turn where the examiner will give you a task card and require you to talk for about 1-2 minutes. To prepare for the cue card topic of ‘Describe a family member you would like to work with’, you’ll be given 1 minute where you can pen down some of your ideas related to the topic.

Introduction

I think partnering or working with a family member is more comfortable for an individual. This will be mostly in the case of starting a business. In India, it’s common to run businesses that are taken care of by their past ancestors. Also, we tend to see businesses that are developed by friends. 

Who the person is?

Here, I would like to talk about the family member who is so close to me. The family member whom I like to work with is my father. He runs a business that is related to engineering works.

Have you ever worked with a person before?

I haven’t worked with my father before, as I had the chance of visiting the office very rarely. At that time I used to observe the works that my father and other staff members were involved in and also I tried to learn the process. 

What kinds of work you would like to do with the person?

As I’m not a person from an engineering background and have not been involved in the manufacturing process previously, I think I can't be involved in those works. But, instead, I am able to work in management, financing, and marketing-related works as I have an experience in that.

And explain how you will feel if you can finally work together.

It’s one of the goals that I want to be financially independent and want to handle my father’s business successfully to support him. If I had the chance to work with him, I would feel happy, grateful, and responsible for the work I will be involved in.

Conclusion

Working with a family member like my father is always a dream for me. If I had a chance, I would surely work with him without any hesitation.

Introduction

Starting a business or working with a family member is a more convenient way as we can discuss our goals clearly and are able to manage the finances. In most of the family, there will be one member who always motivates the young people to be involved in some business activities. 

Who the person is?

In my family also, there is a person who always encourages me to join him. The person I’m talking about is my uncle who I always wanted to work with.

Have you ever worked with the person before?

My uncle owns a restaurant, where I used to spend most of my holidays there. I haven't been involved in any kind of work, but I used to observe the way they treat customers, serve food, and the process of making the food.

What kinds of work you would like to do with the person?

Years back, my uncle owned a small hotel where he used to cook food for the people. Now when I visit his restaurant, sometimes he used to show me the methodologies of some recipes. As I also have a keen interest in cooking, I want to work as a chef in his restaurant with proper practice.

And explain how you will feel if you can finally work together.

I will always be excited about visiting his restaurant and learning things since childhood. If I am given the opportunity to work with him, I will definitely feel happy and motivated.

Conclusion

For me, the interest in starting a business comes from him. So without any further thought, I will work with my uncle to learn every possible area.

Introduction

I think in everyone’s life there was a day when we used to discuss some funny business plans with siblings or cousins. When thinking about our desire or sharing those, other than close family members there will be no person that can understand or encourage us.

Who the person is?

The person I used to discuss all my business thoughts and desires is my cousin sister. I and my cousin sister used to discuss starting a boutique.

Have you ever worked with the person before?

I and my cousin sister have worked as an intern in an organisation. She was my mentor at that time, whenever I was stuck with some complications she would always guide me. She used to motivate me by pointing out my ability.

What kinds of work you would like to do with the person?

Starting a boutique is one of our long-term plans which we used to always plan for, whenever we had a meet-up. I’m a person who wants to implement my creativity in my business on an everyday basis.

And explain how you will feel if you can finally work together.

I will be very excited and happy to work with her. As we are in the process of planning for the boutique, we both are eager to launch it.

There are many people out there who don't like to work with a family member. But in my case, I love to work with a family member and that too with my cousin sister.

I think for everyone, there will be a family member who is there to listen to all your business ideas. If someone wants to start something, I think we can collaborate with any of the family members as we’re in the learning phase. 

Who the person is?

In my family, my brother was an older one whom every younger person will discuss their career goals with. A family member I would like to work with is my brother as I always look after him for any kind of professional and career-related help. 

Have you ever worked with the person before?

I used to have conversations with my brother about many of my college and work-related projects but for work, I haven’t joined hands with him. 

What kinds of work you would like to do with the person?

He has been running an English coaching center for the past 5 years. If I get a chance to work with him, I will take part in training students to improve their English ability. Since childhood, I have loved to teach people, and still, it’s one of my aspirations.

And explain how you will feel if you can finally work together.

As it was one of my career goals, I will feel really happy and it will be a great start for my career. Maybe in the future, like my brother, I can also start a coaching center to educate people.

I think, if we have a family member who runs a business that is related to the field that we dream of, we can go ahead and kick-start the journey by working with them.

People like to set up a family business to showcase the skills which they carry for many generations, to get financial stability, and to strengthen intergenerational bonds.

4. What are the advantages and disadvantages of a family business?

The major advantage of a family business is that you can learn different things within a short period of time and there will be no specific rules as workplace fixes. The disadvantages of a family business are there will be no proper structure, and a lack of vision and long-term goals.

5. What are the causes for the success of a family business?

The success of a family business depends on the communication they make with the younger generation, by creating a strategic plan, making innovations, and having a realistic long-term goal.

6. How is the relation among members of a family business?

I think that the relationship among members in a family business needs to be smoother. However, businesses run based on the customer and products, having the right people and the right relationship with people plays a vital role, especially in a family business.

7. Why should family members work together?

Working with a family member will help you get job security, experience, flexible working conditions, and the expected finances.
