There are three rounds in the IELTS Speaking test. The first is Introduction, second is cue cards and the third and last is the discussion round. This blog comprises IELTS cue card Topic (Speaking): “Describe your dream house” having two sample answers along with nine follow-up questions. In the second round, that is the cue card section, the candidate will be given the topic along with a notepad, which you can use to prepare your answer. They will be provided 1 minute to prepare the answer, after which you will have to speak for 1-2 minutes on the question. This round will be followed by the last and final round which is the discussion round. This round will have follow-up questions related to the cue card topic, “Describe your dream house.”

Describe your dream house - Model answer 1

Introduction
The phrase “Home Sweet Home”, describes what a home is. Everyone has a vision for their own house and to live happily in that home. A space exclusively for myself, in which I can invite the people I love and at the same time being completely myself. 

Where is your dream house located?
My dream home would be a beach-side house. So, every morning, I would first draw the curtains and watch the sunrise as  the waves crash into the shore. The sound of crashing waves are melodic and soothing to me, bringing me inner peace. On top of that, I find it amazing to picture myself relaxing on the porch, feeling the salty breeze rip through the tangles in my hair.

What would it look like?
The house would be big to accommodate me, my parents, and my friends for when they come over for sleepovers. I wish to have a house, whose door is always open to welcome family and friends to come by. It would be in hues of peach colour to complement the ocean's blue colour and create a contrast to it. I also see a lot of paintings on my walls.

When would you like to live in your dream house?
If I could live in this house right now, I would be over the moon. But I think I would buy and live in it, in about six to seven years when I have completed my education and am financially sound to support not just myself but my parents too.

Why is this house perfect for you?
It would be perfect to me as i will personally select everything that will be in the house, as well as the location of my choice. 

Conclusion
In the end I will be very happy to live in my dream house which I have built for my parents and myself with my hard earned money. Seeing the proud smile that my parents have upon seeing my dream house would make me the happiest.

Describe your dream house - Model answer 2

Introduction

• Every person has a dream house they envision for themselves.
• Home is where our loved ones reside. But a house that we ourselves create brings more joy and happiness.

Where is your dream house located?

• Currently my family lives away from our relatives.
• Hence, I want my house to be located near our relatives and friends.
• The location I prefer more is my hometown. It has so many memories of my childhood.

What would it look like?

• I prefer a small two storey house, as big houses are difficult to maintain and clean.
• My house would have three bedrooms, a lobby, a kitchen, a small lawn in the front and a kitchen garden too.
• I am very fond of cooking, and I wanted to grow my own vegetables.
• I will grow seasonal vegetables as well as herbs such as mint, basil, rosemary.
• I also want a solar system installed to generate solar energy.

When would you like to live in your dream house?

• I would like to live in this house in the future, with my own little family, With my parents, future partner and children.
• When I am financially sound and able to support myself and my parents.

Why is this house perfect for you?

• This house will include everything I love.
• The most important thing will be the vicinity of family and friends, who support and love me.
• Being a family person I love the company of my relatives and friends a lot.

• I will work hard to make my dream house a reality and live there as soon as possible.

IELTS Speaking Part 3: Describe your dream house Follow-up Questions

This is the last round after the cue card. It is called a discussion round. The duration of this section is 5 minutes. The candidates are supposed to give elaborate answers of at least 3-4 lines. Here you have been provided with IELTS speaking , 9 follow-up questions for the cue card topic, “Describe your dream house”.

1. Do most Indian people live in an apartment or house?
Answer: I think it depends highly on the city they are residing in as well as the region they are living in. For example, most people living in Mumbai are more inclined to live in apartments, as they are more affordable and available. However, on the other hand a person living in a small town such as Vadodara, might be living in a house as it is not that expensive and their lifestyle can be maintained.

2. Do young people in your country like to live with their parents or by themselves?
Answer: In India, young people usually tend to live with their parents if they live in the same city. Indians are known to live in joint families, meaning that children stay with parents. They only live by themselves, if they migrate to another city or country for their education or work purpose.

3. Do Indian people like to rent a place to live?
Answer: Indians generally live with their parents in their ancestral houses owned and passed down in hereditary from generation to generation. They take pride in their ancestral houses as it has their family traditions and status. There are indeed some people who rent a place to live, but it is only because they migrate to a different country or city for work.

4. Would you live in a foreign country in the future?
Answer: Yes, I definitely would like to live in foreign country. I have made a plan for my education, which includes graduating from an institute in USA or  United Kingdom. The institute I am inclined towards has an excellent education system, which is at an affordable price too.

5. How is modern home design in your country different to that of the past?
Answer: The modern houses are very different from those of the past. Modern houses have a design blueprint which includes a whole lot of things, different styles of windows, landscape and so on. This was not something which was inclusive in the past house designs. They had a generalised design for all houses.

6. In your country what type of home do most people live in?
Answer: India is a very big country with a vast diversity of population residing in it. The type of house a person is living in depends on the region they are living in majorly. For example, a person living in north east India would have a bamboo or wood house. The people in North India specially in the himalayan region have sloped roofs on their houses to ensure snow can slide off their roof. And people living in metropolitan cities tend to live in apartments.

7. Do people prefer to live in Modern Homes or the older style homes (for example from 50 years ago)?
Answer: Even though we are living in a modern age, most senior citizens, at least in my country, prefer to live in older style houses. This is because it gives them some sense of familiarity in this age, where western culture and fashion is being adapted by everyone. I personally prefer living in an old style house too.

8. How are modern homes different from older homes?
Answer: Older homes in India have a courtyard or atrium. These are an open roofless space in the middle of the house. They are also meant to accommodate a whole family meaning they are spacious and spread in a big plot of land. However, modern houses are designed in a way that they are only enough to accommodate a nuclear family of parents and 2 children. But they are equipped with all the modern facilities and electrics.

9. What are the differences between houses and apartments?
Answer: The biggest difference between the two is; a house is a stand alone building meant to accommodate only the owner and his family, whereas, an apartment is a big building which is divided into multiple units that can accommodate a number of different families. Houses are spacious and have an exclusive parking space, while apartments are limited in space and have shared parking and hallways.
