In certain countries, it is usual for high school graduates to take a gap year to travel and get professional experience before enrolling in universities. The benefit and the drawback of the statement will be addressed further. 

The major advantage to work or travel before entering institutes is as follows: Since work experience enables students to demonstrate their readiness for vocational degrees by gaining experience, many take a year off before enrolling in institutions to get valuable job experience or to travel. To cite an example, some universities such as the University of Manitoba, provide preference to applicants with prior job experience; hence, it is easier for students to be picked if they have previous work experience, which is also advantageous for their careers. Therefore, a minimum of one year of experience is necessary to get a superior education.

In contrast, the drawback of this statement is that it is very difficult to realise interesting activities, which will also need a significant investment of time and money. In addition, if students get too involved or preoccupied during their gap year, they may lose interest in their academics, which would negatively impact their future.
