Why September Intake in Canada?
September intake (or Fall intake) is the primary and most popular intake in Canada for future students due to its ever-growing demand. This intake gives 3-4 months for Indian students and other international students whose native language is not English to apply for their dream university and course. Other benefits of this fall intake include scholarships (partial and full), grants, and financial aid.
Please note that all Canadian universities refer to “September intake” as “Fall intake” or “Autumn intake”.

Step-by-Step Process for September Intake/Fall Intake in Canada 2024
Step 1 - Research the universities and courses (April - August 2023)
- For university admissions, first research about the fall-intake universities between April and August of the previous year. The research must be based on the location preference, university rankings, sports & library, etc.
- After choosing a university, research the course programs (part-time/full-time) according to your academic interests and future plans.
- Consult with some mentors, lecturers, and study-abroad experts while choosing your university and course.
- After the course selection, check out for scholarships offered by colleges.
- Since many students apply for the fall intake in Canada, most bank loans are inexpensive and economical.
- After finalising the university and course, download the application form and brochures to know their expectations, resources and services.
Step 2 - Get ready for the international standardised tests (August - November 2023)
- Whether you’re applying for a bachelor’s or master’s degree, the best time to take international standardised tests is August - November.
- Check the minimum requirements scores of IELTS, TOEFL, PTE, Duolingo, etc., for your targeted university and prove your English language proficiency.
- If you’re interested in Engineering (UG/PG), you may need to appear for SAT, GMAT or GRE (as per the university’s eligibility criteria).
- Make sure your preparation is well-planned. Collect all study materials way ahead.
- The best time to appear for any international standardised test is August - November. However, consider October as the buffer time for the retake.
- Once you’ve received your test results and scorecards, upload them on the university website. Don’t wait till the last minute.
Step 3 - Fill the university’s application form (November 2023 - January 2024)
- This is the most important time when you provide your documents, including the application form, academic transcripts, professional experiences (if any), and medical certificates.
- Draft your Letter of Recommendation (LOR), Statement of Purpose (SOP), and curriculum vitae (CV) or resume.
- While drafting the LOR or SOP, seek help from college professors or seniors.
- Submit your LOR, SOP, backlog certificate (if any) and other required documents before the deadline.
Step 4 - Reply to College emails (January - February 2024)
- Once all applications and documents are submitted, you will receive an email from the university to proceed with the September intake in Canada.
- You must reply to that email promptly, not at the last date.
- Make sure you check your grammar and spelling.
- During January and February, you may need to attend a personal interview (virtually). So schedule a suitable appointment.
- Based on your response, you will get a letter of acceptance (LOA) from the college/university.
- Finally, pay a non-refundable deposit to confirm your admission and arrange your finances.
- Generally, students are advised to follow the application deadlines according to their student status (domestic or international).
Step 5 - Get your finances and apply for a Canada student visa (February - April 2024)
- For overseas studies, Canada offers a student-direct stream (SDS). Know the difference between SDS and NON-SDS visa and apply between February and April.
- Be aware of the Canada study permit, student visa requirements, processing time, and the necessary documentation and photocopies.
- Look for student accommodation facilities.
- Book airline tickets in advance at affordable rates.
- Apply and get an international debit card or credit card.
- Lastly, check the pre-departure checklist.
